More than 30 years ago theater audiences were treated to something special, The Karate Kid. A martial arts drama film directed by John G. Avildsen and starring Ralph Macchio, William Zabka, and the late great, Pat Morita. The film spawned a franchise that featured 3 sequels and one remake.

Later this year we will be getting a new series from YouTube, Sony Pictures Television and Overbrook Entertainment. Titled Cobra Kai, the streaming series will see the original film’s actors reprise their roles. Daniel LaRusso (played by Macchio) is living a comfortable life with his family in Encino, owning a group of car dealerships. His old rival Johnny Lawrence (played by Zabka), hasn’t been as successful, and seeking to change his fortune reopens the Cobra Kai dojo. You can check out the first footage below.

Cobra Kai appears to be something of a comedy, or at least a self-parody and is being written and executive produced by Josh Heald and Jon Hurwitz & Hayden Schlossberg. Hurwitz & Schlossberg will also direct much of the series. Executive producers include Susan Ekins, Will Smith, James Lassiter and Caleeb Pinkett. In an interview with The Hollowood Reporter Hurwitz and Schlossberg stated the following about the film:

“Cobra Kai will be a true continuation of the original films — packed with comedy, heart and thrilling fight scenes. We can’t wait to reignite the LaRusso-Lawrence rivalry, and we’re thankful to our partners at YouTube Red, Sony Pictures Television and Overbrook for their shared enthusiasm in making our dream project a reality.”

In addition the series stars Courtney Henggeler as Daniel’s wife Amanda, Mary Mouser as their daughter Samantha, Tanner Buchanan as Johnny’s son Robby Keene, and Ed Asner as Sid Weinberg, Johnny’s stepfather.

Cobra Kai will consist of 10 episodes and will be available later this year on YouTube Red as part of its original programming lineup.
