A regular junior varsity matchup between Lakeshore High and Kalamazoo Central in Kalamazoo, Michigan, turned into a gut-punch moment on Sept. 18 when 15-year-old Colton Mims was body-slammed by an opposing player, even while already grounded. The reckless move fractured two vertebrae in his lower spine. A video taken by his mother is now going viral, and K-town is in shock with parents, students, and coaches demanding accountability.

When a Game Crosses the Line

During the third quarter of the Lakeshore vs. Kalamazoo Central JV matchup, video shows a Lakeshore player being tackled. But the play didn’t end there. Standing over him, a larger opponent then jumped down on the grounded teen before walking away.

His mother, Courtney Mims, watched in horror. “And I at first was like, ‘Is that my son?’ And as soon as it clicked that it was, I couldn’t be stopped. I’ve never felt anything like it,” she told reporters.

Doctors say the boy suffered fractures in two spots in his lower spine. He was hospitalized, then released to recover at home, but the rest of this season, and perhaps any future in football, is now up in the air.

Both schools have issued statements condemning the act as “unacceptable” and emphasizing that it does not reflect their values of sportsmanship and respect. Schools are working under the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s rules for discipline.

Social media lit up once the video surfaced. Some users were outraged at the size difference, calling it a clear case of a player abusing power. Others pulled for the injured teen, praising his courage and demanding better protection for youth athletes.

Mims, still shaken, says she wants more than just apologies. “These boys are high school boys. They’re 15 years old. The game means a lot to them… For somebody to try to take that from somebody doing so much is awful for me to see.”
