ICE has been integrating itself into major cities across the U.S. in recent months. As to be expected, the general public has a lot to say about this. This week, a man was kidnapped by ICE agents in Bread Garden, Iowa, during his work shift. The unprovoked and violent attack on Jorge Elieser Gonzalez, an essential worker, has many Iowans up in arms. During a recent Iowa parade, the crowd was less than happy to see a Trump float make an appearance.
Abbey (@mega.munchabb on TikTok) shared her video on TikTok. It was titled, “Music to my ears was hearing everyone at the Iowa City Homecoming Parade boo this Trump float.” The float can be seen turning a corner in Iowa City in front of the University of Iowa. Decked out with Trump signs and flags, you hear the crowd screaming, “Boo!” as it drives by. You can see others laughing and even flipping off the float.
Abbey says in her video that more drama happened after she ended her video. She stated that the mayor got up and yelled out to the people on the float, “GET OUT OF HERE AND TAKE. ICE. WITH YOU!” Abbey also went on to say, “My heart goes out to ALL that are fearing being taken by ICE and all those that ICE has affected, and a special shoutout to this man and his wife for giving them the bird.” It feels really good to see a community come together in the name of dissing republicans.
Commenters pointed out that Iowa is typically a red state but cities usually don’t side with conservatives. Abbey explained, “It is, but I think it’s because of the small towns and farm towns that vote red. Iowa City and the bigger communities in Iowa are blue. I love Iowa City!!” Another commenter pointed out, “Same thing in Montana, the education accessibility directly affects the voting here too.” Another person claimed, “It’s all lies, most people do not support that orange s**t stain on American history.” Individuals likely see it as a sign of disrespect that somebody would drive a Trump float through the area during a parade when parades signify community. What better way to show community than by showing pride for a president who tries to break up communities from the inside out, right?
