The religious landscape in America is a vast one, which means we have a large population of varying faiths. The fact that some individuals believe Christianity is the only ‘permitted’ faith in America is ludicrous. However, this doesn’t stop loud, obnoxious people from having their say on the matter. A MAGA Karen in Michigan recently showed her true colors when she was literally offended by a Muslim church’s call of prayer.
To better understand why this Karen is being so ridiculous, it makes sense to focus on what a call of prayer actually is. In the Muslim faith, a church plays an Arabic narrative five times a day that reminds Muslim people to worship. Of course, White conservative people in America are offended by the mere existence of Muslims and mosques. Self-declared MAGA Mama on TikTok was so triggered by the call of prayer at a Detroit mosque that she had to film it for others to hear.
In her video, MAGA Mama stands in front of a local mosque as the call of prayer goes off “five times a day,” according to her. She sounds absolutely disgusted as she says we have to hear this “here in the United States,” as if the bells and pipe organs of Christian churches aren’t annoying, too. MAGA Mama asks her audience, “Would you like to hear this blasting through your neighborhood?”
“They don’t have a choice of whether they hear this or not,” MAGA Mama argues. But who is this really hurting? And why is she gatekeeping other peoples’ religions? “I don’t know why this disturbs my soul… it just does! It doesn’t make me a bad person; my fear is legit!!” said one commenter, hearing Arabic over the loudspeaker.
“It doesn’t bother me! Muslims, from my experience, are good people of FAITH!” one person said—the few that weren’t bothered by the church. The church in my town makes noise several times a day; I hardly notice it.
“Wouldn’t bother me I live next to a Catholic church and I hear bells all the time 1st amendment,” said another. But see, the difference here is that many who were entering the mosque were mostly people of color. Why else would MAGA Mama have a problem with people taking time out of their to worship? They aren’t bothering her.
