Parents expect that their kids’ schools should communicate with them if anything goes wrong. Unfortunately, this didn’t happen in North Carolina. She was left furious after her nine-year-old son’s school called the police on him instead of calling her. According to her, her son goes to after-school because she is a nurse. For some reason, the school made a mistake and confused him with another child, so they thought that he should have been picked up. Rather than calling her to come pick her kid up, they called the police and said that she had abandoned him. The mom only found out what was happening when an officer called her to ask if she needed him to bring her son home. Of course, she made sure to head to the school immediately.
Once the North Carolina mom reached the school, a White woman approached her. The mom lost it as she repeatedly asked them if they had called her to inform her about her son. The woman’s response was to say that they sent her a message through the Parent Square app. How did they expect that a nurse, who works at urgent care, would be able to check her messages? Due to her emotional state, the school called the police on her. They could have just apologized and taken some accountability. While the police were being called, another White woman approached the Black mom and told her, “This doesn’t have anything to do with race.” If this doesn’t have anything to do with race, then why did you bring it up?
It wasn’t just that the North Carolina school called the police on a nine-year-old kid, but they did that to a Black child. It was terrifying for him to go through this encounter with the police. He even ran to his mother, crying as soon as he saw her. She shared another video where her son talked about how he was scared to go back to school. No kid should feel like this. The mom also mentioned that she would bring her attorney to a meeting scheduled with the school. She deserves an explanation and an apology as well. The entire situation is frustrating, and the mom couldn’t help but feel that this was targeted. She has a point that if it were a White boy, the school probably wouldn’t have called the police at all.
People Reacting to the North Carolina School’s Actions
A lot of people were furious about what happened to the North Carolina mother and her son. Many encouraged her to sue the school, as one person said, “They called the police?!!! THE POLICE?!! Oh this would be a lawsuit for me.” One woman then wrote, “Get that attorney in that office, yes!” Others found it insane that the school didn’t call her at all. Plus, how does a school get confused about the kids they have? “As a principal, I am sitting here like. Why in the world would they not call you?! Also, how did they mix him up if they been doing this since August! Yea that’s wild!” one person wrote. Another person then said, “I’m confused. If he’s supposed to be an after school program, how do they not know which children attend and where they go! That’s crazy!”
More people reacted to the North Carolina school’s behavior. Several comments agreed that what happened was because of race. “‘It’s not about race’ that’s actually wild. I’m white and I 100% believe it was driven by racial profile. If it wasn’t driven by racial profiling then they would’ve never said that and either accountability or the phone call would’ve happened,” one person wrote. Someone else then said, “as a white women i knew immediately that the office staff that called the police were absolutely white and absolutely this is about race! Im so [expletive] sick of white people and this [expletive] . How dare they, they all need to be fired yesterday!” Let’s hope that the school will be held accountable and that the little boy will be okay.
