Special education in the United States has always had roadblocks. For centuries, students facing disabilities didn’t have equal access to the education that their young counterparts did. Now, there are rising concerns for children in special education once again. A Kansas man talks about the setbacks that educators, schools, and children as a whole will be facing due to cuts. It truly shows us how much our American government cares about our children.
Spencer (@blackgooglevisual) shared a TikTok video titled, “Good news if you hate kids.” In the video, he explains the Department of Education fired almost everybody who is a part of the Special Education Office. This means that the office responsible for overseeing special education in schools is gutted. These mass layoffs, totaling 466 people, were part of other government cuts that took jobs from a total of 4,200 people.
Spencer confirms that oversight of special education is shifting toward the Department of Health and Human Services, where RFK Jr. is in charge. Congress would need to pass this. But if it happens, there could be major trouble. Spencer bleakly quips, “I look forward to finding out how raw milk can help these special needs children.” After RFK Jr. made comments regarding raw milk and its deregulation, his comment makes too much sense. Yes, we’re definitely in trouble. There’s no imagining how these children will suffer without proper education and support in place for them.
One commenter asked, “Does anyone find it odd that RFK Jr. has been obsessed with autism and now this? What is their end plan with all of this.” Another person said, “I thought Trump only hates immigrants. No he hates the American people too.” Other special education workers showed their concern for special needs children. They may not have the same future opportunities as other children.
When it comes down to it, this is what the Trump Administration wants. Why would education ever be a priority to them? And why are they able to follow through with mass layoffs of crucial workers without an act of Congress? Families may find that they have nowhere to turn very soon, and that in itself is scary.
