Many people are reaching their breaking point, and for one Minnesota woman, things have been just as difficult. She shared her story on Reddit under the username u/akneebriateit, describing a tense phone call with her mother after discovering that her health insurance premium had skyrocketed from $0 to $2,200 a month.
She texted her mom about the bill issue and soon received a call. Hearing that her daughter had been crying, the woman’s mother began scolding her to pull herself together and blamed the situation on former President Obama, insisting that Trump was only trying to fix the mess.
The woman tried to calmly explain that the bill increases were caused by tax cuts benefiting the wealthy and funding shifts toward the military and ICE, but her mother hung up before she could finish. Moments later, a text followed, telling her not to call back until she had calmed down.
The Redditor said she hadn’t even raised her voice. In a later edit, she explained that she still talks to her mother because she’s renting from her, and affordable housing in her area is impossible to find. As a full-time student with a child, she said moving out simply isn’t feasible right now.
Internet users who heard the story expressed sympathy for the Minnesota woman. Many agreed that things are hard for everyone these days, blaming Trump’s policies for worsening the economy. Yet it’s also apparent that many MAGA supporters continue to blind themselves to the truth, still believing that Trump is on their side while blaming every other president for their problems. “They choose Trump over their own families every single time,” one user wrote.
Some users even urged the Minnesota woman to cut ties with her mother, saying it was clear that her mother wasn’t supportive at all. “Cut her off. She doesn’t care about you. You are not as important as her political ideology, and you never will be. You could tell her that you’re bankrupt or jailed because of Trump, and she still wouldn’t care. A lot of parents only ‘love’ you as long as you conform to their image of you,” one commenter said.
Another added, “For anyone who thinks this is just about politics every time someone considers cutting off a Trump-enthusiast parent, it’s not. It’s about these controlling, narcissistic, self-centered people who also happen to love Trump.”
Surprisingly, the Minnesota woman agreed that her mother can be very controlling and self-centered. She said her mother has never liked her showing any emotion other than happiness.
