I’m so lucky to have a mother-in-law that I actually like. I’ve heard various horror stories of parents with absolutely unhinged behaviors acting as though they have no idea why their children don’t want them in their lives. One Alabama mother decided that she didn’t want her gender revealed to be ruined by her mother-in-law. So, she went ahead with a plan that couldn’t be ruined even if her mother-in-law tried with all her might: doing it inside a giant, self-contained bubble. There are so many people in the world who are just so much more creative than I am.
The above video was posted to the TikTok account @balloonsbysky. This balloon artist creates various arches and similar decorations for events like these and demonstrates a gender reveal in an outdoor, wooded area. In the center of the frame is a large balloon-like object covered by a black tarp. You can hear a countdown in the background. Once it reaches one, the tarp is pulled back to reveal the baby’s mother and father inside a giant bubble, with blue balloons flying around them. It’s both very cool and a bit extreme, with the caption reading, “POV: You do a gender reveal in a bubble so your mother-in-law can’t steal the moment.”
While the video itself isn’t referring to @balloonsbysky’s, also known as Skyler Evans, video, it is a relatively well-known phenomenon in the marriage space. Apparently, some mother-in-laws can’t stand the sight of their sons celebrating, knowing what the gender of their child is, without including them. I’m not exactly sure why this is such a prominent trend, but the video’s virality got the entire internet talking.
In fact, one of the platform’s biggest creators, Madison Humphrey, parodied the incident because of just how relatable it is. Other commentators had a lot of opinions to share, with one person even saying, “Imagine you open your eyes and she’s in there with you 😬🥲.” More than anything, people thought it was a great idea as a whole and an even more excellent way to get back at your mother-in-law if she happens to be this type of person.
Fortunately, it appears that the gender reveal went smoothly, and the happy family will soon be welcoming a little boy. I want to think that there’s a specific type of mother-in-law somewhere in the world watching this same video right now and thinking to themselves, “Why would anyone want to do that to their mother?“
