A New Jersey TikToker is facing intense backlash online after sharing what she called her “most controversial views,” including one claim that quickly ignited a heated debate across social media.

The video, posted by Athena Karvellas, included several political opinions. However, one statement in particular drew the most criticism from viewers. Among these was the claim that Black people had “created slavery,” ending with her being called out across social media platforms and in the rest of her posted content.

TikToker Athena Karvellas initially shared her “most controversial views” back on March 2. These included armed men protecting schools and Islam not belonging in the West. However, the one that caught the attention of most users was her claim that Black people started slavery.

“I’m tired of Black people pretending like they are the ones that didn’t start slavery, because they were,” she said. “And I’m tired of them pretending that White people didn’t die to end slavery, because we were.”

Athena added modern-day slave owners are “people of color.” She added, “People in the Black community avoid these truths because they want to move up in this country without having to do the hard work.”

Of course, people called the New Jersey woman out on her statement that Black people started slavery. Historians note that slavery has existed in various forms across many civilizations throughout history. It goes back all the way to ancient civilizations like Egypt.

Eventually, the transatlantic slave trade introduced in the 15th century the concept of a racialized and commercialized system of slavery, as per The New York Times.

“Controversial views = racism,” one user wrote. Another one commented, “Just loud and wrong.” A third one added, “These comments aren’t rude enough for me.”

TikToker Clarifies Statement

More than a week later, Athena posted a follow-up in which she admitted that her initial clip had angered the Black community. She then clarified her stance, saying that by stating that Black people “created slavery,” she really meant slavery in the United States.

The New Jersey woman cited the case of Anthony Johnson, an African landowner who, according to her, contributed to the creation of “legal slavery” by suing the family of John Casor. He had been his servant and left after claiming his servitude was done. Virginia courts ruled in Johnson’s favor, making Casor his “slave for life.”

However, the African American Intellectual History Society (AAIHS) contested Athena’s claim, labeling it a “right-wing talking point.” The AAIHS cited the case of Hugh Gwyn, who became the “first recognized slave owner,” as John Punch was perpetually enslaved as punishment for fleeing his indenture.

And while some agreed with Athena and her clarification, others didn’t and continued blasting her. One person said, “Please educate yourself, ma’am.” Another one wrote, “she’s leaving out A LOT.” A third one added, “Source: trust me, bro.”

The debate surrounding her comments continues online, as users argue over historical interpretation, race, and the spread of controversial viewpoints on social media.
