A new video circulating on Reddit shows U.S. Senator Tim Scott being confronted on the streets of his home state by an angry Black man accusing him of betraying his community and “kissing up” to former president Donald Trump.
In the clip, the man approaches Scott in a public area near Charleston, South Carolina, shouting, “You’re a disgrace to all Black people!” and “You’re an ass-kisser for Trump!” Scott, appearing calm but visibly uncomfortable, responds with a measured, “God bless you, brotha. Take your picture.”
That attempt at civility only fueled the man’s frustration. “You’re no brother of mine,” the man fires back. “You’ve got no respect or love for your people. Learn some history!” Scott keeps his composure, repeating, “Take your picture,” as onlookers record and several men, believed to be part of his security detail, look on.
The exchange comes as Scott continues to navigate his position within a Republican Party still firmly dominated by Trump. After dropping out of his 2024 presidential bid, Scott endorsed Trump in January, calling him a leader who could “unite our country.” The endorsement marked a clear shift for the senator, who once positioned himself as a bridge-builder and optimistic conservative voice willing to speak out against racially charged rhetoric.
On Reddit, the top-voted comment, from user u/SongFeisty8759, reads: “There is just something inherently weird about being a Black Republican… unless you’re planning to destroy the party from within.” Others echoed that sentiment, calling Scott a “grifter,” “a disposable tool” for the GOP, and “a disgrace to South Carolina and his own race.”
Not everyone joined the pile-on. One user reminded commenters that “there are idiots in all walks of life.” But the overwhelming tone reflected frustration with Scott’s perceived proximity to Trump and his use by the Republican establishment as a symbol of diversity.
The incident underscores how divisive Scott’s political trajectory has become among Black voters and progressives alike. Once a story of historic success, it’s since descended into a catalyst for discussions about race, loyalty, and the modern GOP.
Scott’s office has not released a statement regarding the encounter.
