America has become very tense and divisive with Trump actively ruining the economy and making life worse for the majority of people. To make matters worse, people of color also have to deal with ICE agents hunting them. It is not rare to hear news of people getting arrested without proper cause or procedure. Many people have started living in fear of ICE, afraid they might be kidnapped one day while going to work or even just doing their grocery shopping. However, the mayor-elect of New York, Zohran Mamdani, has promised to do something about it.
He acknowledged the fact that these days ICE agents have become among those who are seen as above the law. After all, how many news stories have there been about them arresting people without warrants, breaking into homes, destroying property, and generally acting more like thugs than law officers.
Seeing this, Zohran Mamdani said his message to ICE agents and everyone in New York is pretty straightforward. Nobody gets a free pass. If you break the law, you face the consequences, no matter who you are. He talked about how too many people across the country have started to believe that certain folks, whether it is the president or government agents, can get away with things others cannot. Mamdani said New York people are ready for something different, a time when the rules actually apply to everyone, where there is real honesty and accountability. That, he said, is exactly what his administration plans to deliver.
Internet users applauded Mamdani’s decision to uphold the law and try to fight back against the tyrannical actions of the ICE agents which have been going rampant. Regular people could not fight back against ICE agents since they could easily use that as an excuse to arrest innocent people. However, Mamdani is a politician with power, and many New Yorkers hope that things could return to normal after this.
Still, there were also those who remarked that this would be far easier said than done. After all, ICE agents work under Trump’s orders, and the president and his administration certainly would not sit still. Especially considering that they already showed great dislike toward Mamdani in the first place.
“While this is all great to say, getting it done is a different story. Hope he finds a way and that this isn’t just grand standing,” one user wrote. Another said, “Anyone can’t just dress up like an ICE agent and openly kidnap people. No wonder the person in charge was best friends with Epstein.”
