Viral Video Sparks Fury Over Alleged Mid-Chase Pepper Spray by ICE on North Carolina Freeway: ‘They Could Have Killed Somebody’

If this is real it’s madness.

A short, chaotic highway clip circulating on Reddit this week ignited a firestorm of anger, confusion, and skepticism after the uploader claimed that ICE agents in Durham, North Carolina, fired a pepper-ball round at a moving vehicle on November 19, causing it to swerve off the road.

The video shows a dark SUV accelerating alongside another vehicle before the second car veers toward the shoulder. No visible tags, uniforms, or weapons appear in the footage, leaving viewers to piece together what happened from context alone.

Despite the lack of verifiable identifiers, the post exploded, generating more than 1,200 upvotes and a sprawling discussion about ICE tactics, law-enforcement accountability, and the broader climate of fear surrounding immigration enforcement.

The top comment, which set the tone for the thread, captured the community’s immediate reaction:

“That could have caused an accident that killed somebody. Not like ICE cares. That’s their goal.”

Others echoed similar concerns, interpreting the SUV’s aggressive approach as a dangerous escalation. User OnionComb argued that nothing in the video resembled self-defense, writing:

“That SUV chases them down to shoot at them. That is not self defense.”

Another comment distilled the frustration many expressed toward federal immigration enforcement:

“They could have killed somebody.”

Several users brought up past viral incidents involving unmarked vehicles, lane-change collisions, and controversial arrests, pointing to a perceived pattern of high-risk behavior by federal agents in civilian traffic.

Skepticism Over Video Authenticity

Not everyone accepted the video’s framing. A subset of commenters pushed back, pointing out inconsistencies and gaps in the claim.

User saroonz wrote:

“This title is fake and misleading. No reports in Durham of ICE shooting anything into cars on the highway… ICE sucks and I hate them but this account is farming and spreading bad info.”

Others noted environmental inconsistencies, like sunlight, foliage, and weather conditions that didn’t match Durham on the date claimed. Several questioned the lack of visible evidence of pepper-ball fire, firearms, or official markings.

One of the more detailed rebuttals came from Mbgodofwar, who argued:

“Looking at this, how the heck would anyone know if it’s a ‘pepper ball?’… Surely, ICE does enough real things that OP doesn’t have to invent anything.”

The lack of local news coverage certainly raises flags.

Regardless of the clip’s authenticity, the thread quickly morphed into a broader referendum on ICE’s role and conduct. Dozens of users referenced past reports, court cases, and allegations of excessive force to contextualize their concerns.

Some comments veered into political territory, linking the perceived impunity of federal agencies to the current administration. Others debated the limits of state-level prosecution, federal pardons, and accountability mechanisms.

There was also a recurring theme of fear as North Carolina residents feel that unmarked federal vehicles operating on public roads pose a threat to anyone caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.
