The rumors of Activision bringing a remastered version of Spyro the Dragon to consoles has finally been set in stone. The Spyro Reignited Trilogy will be heading to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 21, 2018.
Activision announced earlier this week that the remaster will include the three original games: Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage, Spyro: Year of the Dragon. In the 90’s, Insomniac Games made the original games, but the remaster has been built from scratch by lead developer Toys for Bob, the developer behind Skylanders. It will feature “improved environments, updated controls, brand-new lighting and recreated cinematics,” and old favorites, like Sparx the Firefly and Sheila, have been “creatively re-imagined with additional flair.”
There are over 100 levels in the remaster, and, according to a press release from Activision, they have all been faithfully recreated from the original. In case your nostalgia wasn’t strong enough, Tom Kenny will be returning to voice Spyro for Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage and Spyro: Year of the Dragon, and Stewart Copeland will remaster the soundtrack.
Paul Yan, Chief Creative Director for the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, wrote:
We’re deeply passionate about staying true to the legacy of the original three Spyro games with the Spyro Reignited Trilogy. We’ve poured a lot of love into making the personalities and worlds feel just like fans remember them, while also keeping the game collection surprisingly fresh with lush, high definition detail. We’re bringing back the Spyro we all fell in love with 20 years ago.
In celebration of Spyro’s 20th anniversary, the developers inserted a Spyro easter egg in Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy. If you insert the following code (↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → square) in the menu screen of Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped, the newest trailer for Spyro Reignited Trilogy will start to play.
Spyro Reignited Trilogy will release on September 21, 2018, on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One for $39.99.
