An Asian couple in San Francisco, California, was minding their own business when a group of teenagers approached them. This group then pointed and bowed at them, and mockingly said, “Ni hao,” in a blatantly racist fashion.
The couple shared the story via a TikTok clip uploaded by user mayonayzee (May). There, May explained that, after having dinner, a group of White girl teenagers approached them. Apparently, they came like moths to a flame, given that the California couple were wearing their Adidas jackets, inspired by the Tang dynasty.
May’s boyfriend said that the girls approached them, pointed at them, and started saying, “Oh my god! Ni hao, Ni hao? Ni hao, Ni hao!” The couple was shocked that such a thing was happening in the Bay Area, and even noted that the teenagers began bowing at them.
“They were just like pointing, laughing, and bowing,” May added.
The tale turned extremely ironic and borderline senseless as the racist, mocking teens, following their insensitive and bigoted actions, went into a bubble tea shop. Bubble tea is a Taiwanese beverage.
“I don’t understand how you can be blatantly racist to somebody and then go ahead and consume their culture afterwards. It makes no sense,” May said.
The woman also added that they received compliments on their Adidas jackets, based on Chinese culture. However, she expressed feeling sad that they were mocked in a racist manner the first time they wore the jackets out in the open in the United States.
San Francisco Racism Reactions
Users online blasted the unnamed, racist teenagers who mocked the couple, with some even sharing experiences of their own.
“That’s America for you,” one user commented. Another said, “Nihao-ing you after buying boba is actually embarrassing, honestly.” A third added, “They want the aesthetic & culture but not the people.”
Meanwhile, other users were marveled by the style of the California couple’s jackets.
One user said, “As an arab girl, I REALLY want Adidas Chinese jackets.” Another one commented, “Okay, but I need the jacket. Where did you get it?” A third one added, “This makes me so mad… also I LOVE your jackets!“
Thankfully, it appears that more people in this world appreciate other cultures rather than mocking them.
