With Trump once again serving as President of the United States and with ICE agents reportedly targeting and detaining people based on skin color, it is not surprising that hateful individuals, especially those who harbor strong prejudices toward people of other races or religions, feel more emboldened these days. In the current climate of fear and tension, bigotry seems more public, more brazen, and more unashamed. A recent incident in Burbank, California, is a disturbing illustration of this trend. A man was filmed unleashing an antisemitic tirade, praising Hitler and attacking Judaism in broad daylight.
The incident took place in a parking lot, where the cameraman had apparently confronted the Burbank man. The exchange began when the Burbank man questioned why the cameraman cared about Muslims. The cameraman replied that he had spent the day visiting synagogues. This comment immediately triggered the man, who called synagogues “Satan’s place” and then launched into a hateful rant claiming that Jewish people were destroying America.
As the confrontation escalated, he brought up Hitler, insisting that the Nazi dictator had been right in his treatment of Jewish people. When the cameraman called him a Nazi, the man proudly accepted the label and even made the well-known Nazi salute. His companion attempted to de-escalate the situation by urging him to get into the car, but the Burbank man refused to calm down. Instead, he continued spewing hateful remarks, calling Jews parasites and saying that he would not hesitate to cut them down at any time.
The man then became more aggressive and raised his fist as if preparing to strike, although he ultimately did not. The cameraman, refusing to be intimidated by the antisemitic outburst, continued to push back and taunt him. The Burbank man ended his tirade with the chilling line, “God bless Adolf Hitler.”
Online reaction to the video was swift. Many people expressed shock and disgust at the blatant antisemitism displayed in the footage. “Eww. What a pathetic man,” one user wrote, stunned that someone would openly admit support for Hitler.
Others criticized the woman accompanying him, noting that although she did not repeat any hateful statements herself, she also did not express shock or attempt to stop the hateful behavior. Instead, she simply tried to usher him into the car. “That woman is not shocked by the Nazi stuff at all. She just wants to get him in the car. For any decent person, that would have been a deal breaker right away,” one user commented.
Many people expressed concern about how normalized antisemitic, hateful, and racist rhetoric has become in recent years. More disturbingly, as if confirming those worries, a few online users even said they would like to be friends with the Burbank man.
