South Carolina Drone Smuggles Drugs and Food into Prison for Christmas: ‘Basically DoorDash but With Way Higher Stakes’

A risky airdrop

When it comes to smuggling things in and out of prison, the stakes are pretty high, and for one prison in South Carolina, the “steaks” were high, literally. You read right: someone was trying to fly in a delivery of steak, crab legs, cigarettes, and drugs into the detention center to give the inmates an early Christmas. Unfortunately for them, however, the airdrop was unsuccessful, as a guard discovered the smuggled items first, confiscating them for investigation.

According to AP News, police have reportedly not found out who flew the drone over the prison for the Christmas airdrop. The person responsible can receive up to 30 days in jail just for flying the drone around the facility, but the fact that they smuggled contraband could get them up to 10 years of prison. While the food and drugs might have been a nice gift for the prisoners for the holidays, it might not have been worth a potential decade in prison if the police figure out who the pilot was.

“This is basically DoorDash but with way higher stakes,” laughed a Redditor. “He should have just ordered the crab legs. Way less suspicious than a drone hauling a full steak dinner,” joked another. One person noted that the guard involved might have overlooked the drone delivery if the inmates had bribed him to stay quiet. One commenter was stunned that prisoners would even want uncooked food, considering the steak was raw. However, people always have a way of doing things in prison, so cooking a steak would be the least surprising thing done.

Besides the rather comical delivery of a Christmas meal with drugs for prisoners, one Reddit user was astonished that the drone was able to fly over the prison without issue. “I’m surprised a prison has no system in place to detect drones. Forget crab legs they could be flying in weapons,” they exclaim. That said, it’s a good thing the delivery was a wholesome meal for the holidays, and not anything dangerous.
