Any family would want to keep their elderly loved ones safe, especially when they can’t be with them throughout the day. That’s why so many people rely on hired caregivers to look after aging family members. Unfortunately, not everyone entrusted with that responsibility has good intentions.
In Tennessee, a nurse hired to care for a 97-year-old woman did something unthinkable. The elderly woman had been forced to leave her home and was hospitalized after developing the flu and pneumonia. While she was away receiving treatment, the nurse allegedly returned to her room, not to help, but to steal from her.
What was meant to be a role built on trust instead turned into a shocking betrayal, leaving the family devastated and raising serious concerns about elder abuse and caregiver oversight.
The Tennessee nurse was ultimately caught because the family had installed a Ring camera inside the room. The footage showed her opening drawers and searching through them. As soon as a family member noticed what was happening, she spoke through the camera, asking, “Can I help you with something?” She repeated the question when the nurse didn’t immediately respond.
Startled, the nurse quickly tried to come up with an excuse. She walked up to the camera and claimed she was checking to see if the laundry had been done. That explanation fell apart almost immediately when the family member told her the laundry had already been taken care of the day before.
The nurse then made things worse by saying, “I wasn’t sure. I usually don’t work this floor,” effectively admitting she had no legitimate reason to be there. The family member asked for her name and reiterated that their grandmother didn’t have any laundry in the drawers.
“I didn’t know. I didn’t know if she was gone today or not,” the nurse said, continuing to make excuses. Adding to the concern, a man who wasn’t visible on camera could be heard in the background telling the nurse to “go.”
The moment raised a serious alarm for the family, who later said they feared what could have happened if their grandmother had been home instead of hospitalized. Thankfully, they contacted the police, and authorities are now involved in the investigation.
People Reacting to the Tennessee Nurse Being Caught on Camera
A lot of people were upset by what the Tennessee nurse did, especially with how old the patient was. This made one person write, “‘Mildly’ infuriating? Mate I’d be absolutely FERAL. The audacity of this woman to rob a 97-year-old while she’s literally in hospital with pneumonia. Like read the room??? Actually no, stop reading the room and get OUT of the room, you’re not supposed to be there! At least she’s thick as mince and didn’t notice the camera. Criminal mastermind she is not. What was her face like when she got caught?” Another person pointed out how the nurse’s excuses didn’t make sense. “Doesn’t normally work on this floor but knows where the keys are normally kept? Uh huh…. Sure,” they said.
Many people expressed their disgust over the Tennessee nurse’s actions after seeing the video. One commenter wrote, “I saw you called the cops, GOOD! This is evil and disturbing. I hate that people like this exist, but sadly it’s the truth.”
Another person praised the family for taking action, saying, “Thank you for catching her and involving law enforcement. You’re preventing this from happening to other people’s loved ones. Stealing from a 97-year-old woman is absolutely repulsive.”
Others picked up on an additional detail that raised even more concern. Several viewers noticed a man’s voice at the end of the video, prompting one person to comment, “Listening back, there’s definitely someone else involved.”
Many are now hoping police are able to fully investigate the incident and hold everyone involved accountable for the attempted theft.
