Questions are being raised in Minnesota after a YouTuber named Nick Shirley released a video alleging widespread fraud involving state-funded daycare centers. Shirley traveled to the state and claimed to have uncovered dozens of daycares, many reportedly operated by Somali owners, that he says are improperly collecting millions of dollars in public funds.
According to Shirley, one daycare he highlighted appeared particularly suspicious. The business sign itself misspelled its name as “Quality Learing Center,” yet records allegedly show it received $1.9 million in state funding in 2025. The daycare reportedly listed 99 enrolled children, but when Shirley visited the location, the building appeared completely closed, empty, and even lacked proper windows.
Shirley claims these findings point to a much larger pattern of potential fraud and oversight failures, raising concerns about how daycare funding is being monitored in the state. While the allegations have sparked intense debate online, no official determination has yet been made, and state authorities have not publicly confirmed the claims.
The situation has added pressure on Minnesota leadership to respond and clarify whether these allegations are being investigated and how taxpayer funds are being safeguarded.
In a follow-up video, Shirley approached a nearby Minnesota resident and asked whether he had ever seen children entering or leaving the daycare in question. Given that the facility was reportedly listed as serving 99 children, Shirley argued that regular activity should have been noticeable. The resident said he had never seen any children at the location.
Shirley also pointed out that the same daycare allegedly received $1.5 million in state funds in 2024, adding to his concerns. During the interaction, Shirley asked the man whether he believed state leadership should be held accountable if the allegations were true. The resident responded affirmatively.
Shirley and his team then visited another daycare that he claimed had received approximately $2.66 million in funding. According to his video, individuals who answered the door declined to explain where the children were and asked not to be filmed before closing the door. In some instances, Shirley said staff contacted police, claiming harassment, while continuing to refuse on-camera interviews.
He also highlighted another daycare that he said received more than $3 million. Shirley claimed that over the course of a single day, the locations he visited represented what he believes could amount to roughly $100 million in potential fraud. He further stated that when he attempted to inquire about enrolling a child, he was repeatedly told that no one was available to provide information.
While Shirley argues that his findings point to serious oversight failures, none of the allegations have yet been confirmed by state authorities. Critics have stressed the importance of distinguishing between claims made in online videos and verified conclusions reached through official investigations.
The situation has sparked broader questions about how daycare funding is monitored, what safeguards are in place to prevent abuse, and whether state agencies are adequately auditing programs meant to serve children and families.
