California Governor Gavin Newsom Pokes Fun at Katie Miller’s Greenland Post on X: ‘Looks like she might get pulled over by ICE!’

A new kind of Cold War

Gavin Newsom, the governor of California, posted a fake Russian passport of Republican political adviser Katie Miller via his press office’s X account. This came after Miller posted in the aftermath of the United States’ capture of the Venezuelan president. The arrest of Nicolas Maduro and his wife sparked concern, and humor for some, this weekend. In her post, Miller included an image of Greenland overlaid with the American flag, along with one word: “SOON.”

Miller was referencing remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump who has made several statements indicating his interest in claiming Greenland as an American territory. Over the first year of his second term as president, Trump has repeatedly indicated his interest in taking control of Greenland from Denmark, of which it is currently a part. Danish officials have expressed concern over these remarks, and have even taken steps to show their pride in having Greenland as a part of their nation.

Where does it end?

Concern over these remarks exploded following the U.S. military’s entry into Venezuela this weekend. After weeks of increased presence near Venezuela, the U.S. military entered the country. The military seized President Maduro and his wife. Both face prosecution by the federal government for aiding drug trafficking, which they deny. Trump has also indicated the U.S. will have a part in determining how Venezuela will be governed.

In response to Miller’s insensitive post, Gavin Newsom’s press office responded with an image of a fake Russian passport photo of Miller. This prompted a flood of commentary from X users. One wrote that the passport photo “looks like she might get pulled over by ICE!” Others accused Miller of being a white supremacist, or posted their own creative photo edits making fun of Miller, Trump, and even Newsom.

This interaction showcased the growing divide between American political parties, and opinions on Trump’s recent actions in other countries. Whatever side people take, they’re sure to have strong opinions. At least some have found humor in it – though you have to wonder if the humor Newsom’s press office is using will help or hurt political relations in the long term. At the very least, he and his team have used the tools at their disposal to point out the hypocrisy of one member of the government.
