‘A Chicago Tradition Unlike Any Other,’ Despite Countless Warnings and Several Accidents, Trucks Are Still Getting Stuck Under the Irving Park Bridge

Just another day

There are many traditions in Chicago, but one of the most bizarre and annoying ones involves truckers and Irving Park. Some of you might already know what we’re talking about, but if not, we’re here to inform. As you know, one of the most common annoyances for drivers in the city is when truckers ignore signage and take a wrong turn on roads that are not suitable for these vehicles. Well, it seems that one spot that keeps having these issues is the bridge at Irving Park Road in Chicago, where several trucks have gotten stuck, causing a lot of traffic for other citizens.

If you didn’t know, the Irving Park Road bridge issue isn’t new. It is something that we’ve seen for months now, to the point that many in Chicago now think it is a tradition, and sadly, not a good one.

As you can see, this bridge is not suitable for trucks, especially the bigger ones. However, truckers completely ignore the warnings: several signs say they shouldn’t drive under the bridge, yet they still do. Naturally, this has led to many accidents in which trucks get stuck there because their cargo is too large to fit through the Irving Bridge in Chicago.

The silver lining is that most of the truckers involved have come out unscathed, but that doesn’t mean the incident hasn’t taken its toll. The ones who really suffer are those driving down the road, as accidents like these tend to bring traffic to a halt for several hours until the authorities and towing companies can resolve the conundrum.

While people were rightfully angered before, it seems they have come to terms with these truckers’ lack of self-awareness and have started making some weird suggestions to see if they can prevent these vehicles from getting stuck.

“They should just start leaving the semis there as a warning to others,” commented ComplexHumorDisorder.

“A Chicago tradition unlike any other,” said MostYolked.

The above comment might seem funny to many, but it is actually true that this has become an almost weekly occurrence.

In the end, the authorities need to figure out how to finally keep truckers off this bridge. We already know drivers will ignore almost any signs in the city, so another solution is needed. If not, we’ll eventually have to rename the bridge to something more fitting for these incidents, and even start celebrating the “truck-under-the-bridge” day, because these situations are getting out of hand.
