Racist people aren’t always the most logical individuals. They may try to justify their hatred with arguments they claim are reasonable, but often their anger toward people who are different is driven more by emotion than reason. A recent incident in Austin, Texas, illustrates this perfectly, involving a Texas Marine veteran and a very racist man. The incident began while the Marine veteran was simply walking his dog. He described the encounter as shocking and completely unexpected. The veteran was calmly walking his dog when a racist Austin man approached and told him to go back to his country.
The racist Austin man didn’t linger, immediately trying to leave the scene. But the Texas Marine veteran wasn’t willing to let it go. Pulling out his phone, he began recording the man as he followed him. Despite the other man’s attempt to escape, the veteran calmly caught up and asked, without any anger in his voice, “What did you just say?”
The racist Austin man initially pretended not to hear. The veteran continued, noting that he was sure the man lived nearby, trying to keep the confrontation as civil as possible. When the man continued to ignore him, the Marine veteran quickened his pace to get in front of him and capture his face on video. That’s when the racist Austin man snapped, insisting he didn’t care about being recorded.
After a brief cut in the video, the scene became more intense. The racist Austin man was no longer pretending to be polite. He repeatedly told the Texas Marine veteran to go back to his country. Shockingly, he even claimed he wasn’t racist, insisting he just wanted the veteran to leave America.
Online, viewers were equally stunned by the video. “Imagine saying that to a U.S. Marine,” one user commented, incredulous at the audacity of the racist Austin man toward someone who had devoted his life to protecting the country. Others mocked the man for his cowardice, noting that he tried to run away after making such hateful remarks.
This type of harassment is not unique to the Marine veteran. Another Redditor, claiming to be Native American, shared, “I’m Native American and have had the ‘go back to your country’ thing said to me many times. I love the look these people get when I respond with, ‘I’d love to have my ancestral lands restored, but what are y’all going to do with all the Minnesotans?’ It’s wild to watch the attempts at backpedaling.”
