As conflicts between protesters and federal agents rise in Minnesota, a new ruling offers increased protection. The order, given by Judge Katherine Menendez of Minnesota, prohibits the use of weapons or force against peaceful protestors. The ruling is a direct response to Operation Metro Surge, an aggressive act ordered by President Trump to detain illegal immigrants.
Judge Menendez’s ruling follows the death of Minnesota resident Renee Nicole Good, which sparked protests in and around Minneapolis. Many of these turned violent, with footage showing federal agents using whatever means necessary to subdue protestors. The agents’ methods for crowd control are now restricted in an overwhelming sweep of support for the safety of protestors.
The president’s only recourse in Minnesota’s protests is to threaten to invoke the Insurrection Act. This would send in military troops with boots on the ground to control crowds. Given the new ruling, this would have some legal implications, as protestors are still permitted their right to a peaceful demonstration. However, many republicans claim protestors have become “violent” with agents. This was the case of a Venezuelan national who was recently shot in the leg following a “targeted” traffic stop. The Department of Homeland Security’s account details have not yet been confirmed.
Mixed Reactions to the Judge’s Ruling
The public’s reception to this ruling is also mixed. In a recent Reddit post, some question the ability to sustain a court order such as this one. “Good on the courts, but unless this judge’s order can pummel ICE like a thunderstorm, they are merely words,” one user says. Another replies, providing reassurance and clarity. “Record enough info, and eventually charges or lawsuits can start to happen. Most likely lawsuits. You can’t physically fight back, but you may be able to go to court and take their house.”
Some reactions were frustrated, expressing helplessness toward the situation overall. “Cool, I’m glad that we have decided that they have to follow the law. This won’t do anything, government has failed its people. Someone help us,” one Reddit user says. Many people also questioned the consequences of breaking the order. To this, a Reddit user says, “None, until they start getting pepper-sprayed back. I don’t know what it’s gonna take for folks to realize that the guardrails of democracy are gone, and no one is coming to save us.”
