‘How Do You Even Reform This?’: Anger as Arizona Protesters Get Drive-by Pepper Sprayed by ICE In Extreme Retaliation

Just acting with impunity

ICE strikes again, this time in Arizona, after agents pepper-sprayed protesters who were throwing objects at their vehicles, an act many online viewed as punitive rather than defensive. In the video posted on X, protesters could be seen standing along the sidewalk, the air filled with overlapping voices. Some shouted, others held placards, and a few hurled objects at ICE vehicles, apparently in frustration.

I've been sent video from the end of the ICE raid at the Zipps on 32nd and Shea.

It shows protesters — on the sidewalk, impeding no one — getting drive-by maced by an ICE agent from a truck as it rolls away down the road.

Hard to see how such tactics are justifiable. pic.twitter.com/dZYDCdO2mg

As the line of ICE vehicles began pulling out of the parking lot, after Zipps stores in Arizona were targeted, one truck slowly drove past the crowd. At that moment, an agent leaned out of the passenger-side window and sprayed pepper spray directly toward protesters standing on the sidewalk. Someone behind the camera could be heard screaming, “Oh my God.” One protester fell to the ground, visibly in pain from the spray’s effects, as others rushed in to help.

The video quickly ignited outrage online, with many users condemning ICE’s actions. “How do you even reform this?” one user asked. Another commenter reacted angrily, writing,
“ICE is a posse of out-of-control, barely trained thugs who should be pulled off the street immediately.” A third commenter compared the behavior to militarized gaming and international conflict, stating:

“ICE is living in a Fortnite wonderland where they can go and beat up, mace, arrest, or shoot anyone they want and call it ‘self-defence’ with ‘absolute immunity.’ It looks like they learned it from how the IDF treats Palestinians.”

Another user focused on the contrast between violence and compassion in the clip, writing, “Difficult to see such blatant disregard for fellow Americans by law enforcement. It is, however, inspiring to see how quickly someone will give up their jacket to help care for their neighbors.”

Insults toward ICE continued to pour in. “Pathetic, cowardly, thugs. And encouraged and excused at the highest levels of our government. Can you actually imagine any local police force acting like this towards its community?” one person slammed. Another summed up the situation bluntly. “The brutal impunity is the point.”

Calls for accountability followed. “This is gross. Mace should only be deployed to control an immediate threat,” a commentread. “If authorities neglect to call this behavior out or hold the agents involved responsible, then it only degrades their own legitimacy in the eyes of the public and makes their job harder to do.” Another commenter criticized the tactic itself, writing, “Drive-by macing? Unprofessional us vs them mentality. Unacceptable when they have a monopoly on violence.” Another added, “These guys really believe if they just shove, mace, and even shoot enough people, the population will eventually just accept a new normal.”

However, not everyone condemned ICE’s actions. A number of users defended the agents job in Arizona, pointing to protesters who had thrown objects at the vehicles.

“I’m literally watching them throw things at the vehicles. What about this it non justifiable? They met non-lethal force with non-lethal force,” one user argued. Another echoed that view, stating, “I would say this is justification. But really, throwing things at Federal officers should actually get you a charge.”
