The horrific things we’ve been seeing immigrants go through in America will forever be a stain on our country’s history. It’s especially stressful knowing people are being taken from their homes who never even committed a crime and never asked for this. A Minnesota woman decided to speak up after ICE raids came to the community where she grew up as a child and led a raid, leading to detainments. She not only spoke up, but extended a helping hand to the family of the victims.
TikToker Junk_Mom, Charlotte, shares that ICE raided her favorite Mexican restaurant in her hometown, resulting in “several people” detained and “are still detained.” With tears, she recalls the great memories she had when she was little and learning Spanish. The owners would help her “every single time,” even teaching her different words. She’d tell them her order in Spanish and just make the environment ideal for practice.
A lot of kids would use the Mexican restaurant as their go-to place to hang out and study after school. The owners were cool with it, and would even give out chips and guacamole after school for kids. It was a regular thing for her, even as she went into high school.
“This is a good, nice family that’s a part of the community,” Charlotte says. For example, the restaurant would “hang up posters” every year as a way to sponsor their community’s local schools. And yet, ICE didn’t hesitate to tear this family apart.
Charlotte then calls for action. According to Charlotte, “they need help now” because everyone that was detained “do not have the funds to get them released.”
So, Charlotte took to GoFundMe to help raise money so that these lovely people can be released and return home. She’s already so close to her goal, too! It’s just so sad that it has come to this and the community has to live with this fear.
One commenter asked, “Why is this world so set on punishing kindness and community?”
Several others responded, one of which said it’s what “conservatism hates,” and another pointed out the “rich and powerful” could make more money “from hate than from kindness.”
Another commenter shared, “2 of 3 Mexican restaurants have closed in my town, and the third has significantly reduced its hours. The whole town feels so much smaller and darker,” and it’ll keep happening until ICE is abolished.
