Whenever there is snow, many kids try to shovel it in hopes of earning some money. This is what happened to a 15-year-old Black boy who lives in Pennsylvania. He was offered $100 by a restaurant called Asad’s Hot Chicken in exchange for shoveling the snow at their parking lot. The boy agreed, and he did a great job, which must have been tiring. He didn’t receive the promised payment though. The boy’s mom shared a video on TikTok where she showed the restaurant’s parking lot after her son was done shoveling. According to her, he spent hours working. However, when he was done, the guy at the restaurant refused to pay him the $100. What he did instead was to offer him food despite their agreement. “Asad’s Chicken should be ashamed of themselves,” the mom said.
It was clear from the video that the Pennsylvania mom was quite upset. She pointed out how the restaurant did this to a young Black child. From her words, it seemed like she believed that race had something to do with it. This is especially since she wrote in the caption, “We all know what they think of our youth.” Her video was still effective, though, because the owner of Asad’s Hot Chicken ended up seeing it. He then posted a video explaining how he was very angry when he was informed of how the child was treated. The owner made sure to contact both the mom and her kid and pay him for his service. He also shared that he used to shovel snow as well when he was a child.
In the caption of his video, the Pennsylvania restaurant’s owner wrote, “I am very sorry for what happened and this does not represent who we are or what we stand for. I will be reaching out to the team at that location as well and finding out who was responsible for this.” The worker who tried to scam the kid should definitely be held accountable. Since everything was fixed, the boy’s mom shared another video thanking the owner for reaching out and apologizing. She also thanked him for compensating her son like he was promised. Despite this apology, the mom refused to take down the video. “Deleting the video doesn’t change what happened and how Black kids are treated on a daily basis. We can not just erase injustice because someone says sorry,” she wrote in another post.
People Reacting to the Pennsylvania Restaurant Not Paying the Black Boy
A lot of people were upset by how the Pennsylvania restaurant treated the 15-year-old Black boy. Many also believed that he was taken advantage of because he was Black. This is why one person wrote, “They take from us and our community! We need to stop patronizing them.” Another person then said, “slavery never ended.” This made the mom reply, “No it hasn’t and it’s very sad and unfortunate.” Others believed that the boy should have been paid more than $100, as someone said, “That’s worth more than $100, but as a teen I know he was counting on that! Smh.” One woman also commented, “That is ALOT of snow to shovel with 1 shovel, done by 1 child! $100 is not enough and they know it!”
Several people also asked for the location of the Pennsylvania restaurant so they could go and put the snow back where it was. “Wow the community need to come together and put the snow back,” one person said. Another person wrote, “Where this at I’ll go dumb snow on the lot.” When someone said, “I’m about to plowed the snow back over the parking lot. That’s crazy,” one person was actually ready to pay them to go and do this. Several comments also defended the restaurant’s owner including one comment that read, “I love Asad‼ I don’t believe this‼! He is a great guy and has Nez seemed cheap to me! He gives free food to the police dept, the fire dept and many others! Stop‼!” The owner wasn’t at fault here, but his employee shouldn’t have done that to a little kid.
