It wasn’t just adults who went down to the streets to protest. Many students have also begun dipping their feet into politics to show their dissatisfaction with ICE. Among those groups were Texas high school students who drew significant attention after they were recorded clashing with an adult who told them to stop protesting. You know how kids are and how they generally dislike being told what to do. Despite many adults’ disapproval, many Texas teens still left school grounds to protest. It became serious enough that the Texas governor is now allegedly planning to arrest students who dare to step off campus to protest.
This all started when Greg Abbott was asked about his opinion on the news of students being arrested for protesting in Kyle, Texas. He replied by saying that such a thing was a long time coming, and he described students protesting as disruptive and something that would lead to chaos. The Kyle Police Department said that they didn’t arrest those students because they were protesting but because they were seen holding alcohol.
That didn’t seem to matter to the Texas governor, who now seems to be considering defunding school districts that allowed the students to protest. The internet didn’t like that at all. Many began condemning and criticizing the Texas governor, calling it against the First Amendment right. One TikToker even said that the kids could contact her since she was licensed to practice law and would defend them. She also suggested the students collaborate with each other so the walkouts would happen simultaneously, which would stop the police from arresting them all.
Other users also agreed, saying that the Texas governor was out of line. Many remarked that this threat would just make young people more likely to oppose right-wing politicians and MAGA.“This will not stop the children at all,” one user said.
Some users laughed at the threat, saying that the government was already ready to arrest kids. Many pointed out children who were detained by ICE agents and were now held at detention facilities with their parents. “What are they going to do about the children already in detention centers that are protesting their treatment?” one Redditor asked.
A handful of users said that it was time for them to vote Abbott out of the Texas office and make sure he didn’t become governor again. “We can vote Abbott out! Elections start this month. 🙏❤️” one commenter wrote.
