Times are tough, and the costs for just about everything have become more unfair. However, online users believe the high cost of $125 of repairing a 15-year-old teenager’s school laptop in Louisiana is reasonable. The school charged the student this amount to repair one key on his keyboard, which fell off because he claims to have dropped it. In a post shared on r/Wellthatsucks, he believes that this cost is “Kinda outrageous,” especially for a kid. Unfortunately for him, many people think the cost is deserved.
“25 dollars to fix it. 100 dollars to learn not to drop the laptop again,” says one Reddit commenter. “It is a detergent to treating school property like garbage,” agreed another. One person suggested they lose grade points instead, like how students in parenting and reproductive health classes lose points for dropping or damaging their fake babies. “Your school most likely has insurance on all their laptops and the 125$ is the insurance claim cost to repair/replace the device,” remarked one user.
On the flip side, people claiming to have either repaired laptops themselves or paid for laptop repairs state that $125 is actually a valid cost. “They are probably charging you for the parts and labor for a keyboard replacement,” comments one individual. “Replacing it means replacing the entire keyboard. Add on an hour of labor and there you go,” adds a second. Since some laptops have their keys glued to the keyboard, replacing the entire thing would make sense.
In the end, the 15-year-old definitely should have been more careful with school property, if he could have helped it. $125 is also arguably a solid cost, according to Reddit, but charging a young, jobless student such a high amount is also questionable; at least, the boy thinks so. “I was already careful,” he said in response to a comment. “If you crack the screen they charge you $250.”
