There has been a lot of controversy around Scream 7, especially since it nears its release. While many fans eagerly await it, a significant number oppose it. This comes after Spyglass Media Group, which is behind the movie, dropped actress Melissa Barrera because of her support for Palestine. While this happened in November 2023, people haven’t forgotten about it as they protested the Los Angeles, California premiere.
A video circulating online showed pro-Palestine protesters gathered outside Scream 7’s premiere in Los Angeles, California. You could see them waving Palestinian flags while some held signs as well. According to Deadline, some of the signs read “Cancel Paramount+” and “Paramount has a BLACKLIST of actors who criticize Israel.”
It’s not clear whether the movie will land successfully despite this backlash. Since plans for it were announced, several departures have occurred, aside from Barrera’s. Right after she was dropped, Jenna Ortega also left. In addition, the movie’s original director, Christopher Landon, left as well. Even with this backlash, the series definitely still has a lot of fans.
People Reacting to Scream 7 Facing Backlash by Pro-Palestine Protesters
Many people supported the pro-Palestine protesters who gathered outside of Scream 7’s premiere. They believed that the protesters were doing the right thing, as one person wrote, “Good for them.” Another person said, “good on them for showing up and being heard, and [expletive] this franchise being ruined bc a studio decided it was wrong for melissa berrera to speak up for palestinians. And im GLAD she stands on business with it too.” A fan of the series even decided to watch it illegally. “[expletive] yeah. I’m a big Scream fan but I say screw this one. Might check it out later [piracy emoji] but I say [expletive] Spyglass and any other genocide deniers, I’m not giving a cent to them.”
More people expressed approval of the backlash against Scream 7. One person couldn’t believe that the popular series now receives so much hate, writing, “Never thought a series like Scream would have such deserved bad PR.” Another person said, “Love stuff like this. They wanted to make a statement and create and silence and fear in people for speaking up for Palestinians. They need to know it won’t work.”
Someone else celebrated the movie receiving bad ratings, writing, “This and a 40% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.” Currently, this rating is up to 42%. Whether the boycott calls work or not will only become clear once the movie is released.
