Hotels often offer services beyond just rooms, such as pools, spas, buffets, and more. That said, a Florida family paid to use a hotel’s pool to relax when they discovered that they didn’t have the place to themselves. The pool had another individual swimming, or, floating around inside: a dead rat. It’s a sorry sight, for sure, but a dead rodent in a pool speaks volumes about how clean the pipeways are in the hotel. Even if it’s just a small rat, the water is definitely not safe to swim in.
“Took the family to a hotel for the night to use the pool since it’s been so cold lately,” was all the family member, presumably the mother, said in her post on r/Wellthatsucks, showing a photo of the poor rat. “Rats, foiled again!” quipped a commenter. “Hey free pool snack!” joked another. “Chlorine levels are probably good though,” remarks a third.
Jokes aside, one commenter points out how telling of a bad situation this is to see a floating dead rodent in the hotel’s pool. “For everyone you see there is a dozen more rotting in the filter,” they explain. Another person added how pool owners are well aware that if one dead critter is in the water, then that means there’s a high chance of multiple being elsewhere. These include animals on the smaller side, such as “mice, frogs, or chipmunks.”
That said, even if the pool is well chlorinated and hasn’t been that contaminated once the rodent is removed, the excitement to take a dip in the pool has probably been long gone by now for the Florida family. Not to mention, even if they’re unlikely to contract the hantavirus or other disease, it’s unhygienic and quite nasty. Fortunately, the hotel staff did the right thing after the family informed them about the dead rat, according to OP: “We did and they made us leave the pool.”
