Several recent incidents have raised concerns about teachers using inappropriate language in classrooms. A new example reportedly occurred at a school in Dixon, California. According to those involved, a White teacher used the n-word, a well-known racial slur directed at Black people, as well as the b-word, a slur directed at Latino individuals.
The situation sparked backlash, especially after the teacher reportedly attempted to explain her remarks rather than immediately apologizing. The incident has since drawn criticism and renewed conversations about conduct and accountability in schools.
Students in the classroom appeared shocked by what they heard. One of them said, “My teacher said the n-word and b-word.”
The teacher then attempted to explain herself, saying, “I’m trying to explain. I’m not calling anybody that word. I just said that word.” She went on to compare saying the slurs to saying the word “Asparagus,” which prompted immediate pushback from students. “No no no, that’s not a racial slur,” one student responded.
The situation escalated further when the teacher repeated the slurs again, stating, “I’m not calling anybody a [b-word] a [n-word].” The repetition drew more criticism from those present. Some might argue that such language could appear in a literary context, but according to reports, the teacher was a math instructor, not teaching from a novel at the time.
The incident has sparked criticism and renewed concerns about professionalism and accountability in classrooms.
