Kat Abughazaleh is probably a name that you’ve heard quite often if you’re from Illinois. The woman is known for her outspoken stance against the far right and her criticism of ICE. It’s no wonder that some people and even organizations don’t like her, especially since she’s aiming to enter Congress. Recently, AIPAC released an ad targeting the Illinois candidate. While this is not unusual in politics, it is rare to see a candidate directly address an advertisement that her rivals are airing against her.
In the video she uploaded to her YouTube channel, the Illinois candidate poked fun at the AIPAC ad. She called it the worst attack ad against her, pointing out how strange it was that they tried to paint her as mysterious when she has always been open about her past and her current stances on important political topics. She also remarked that the AIPAC ad seemed targeted at 18- to 34-year-olds and said she didn’t understand why they tried to portray her moving to Illinois as a negative, noting that many young people move to other states or even other countries.
Another major criticism she had of the AIPAC ad was how it dug up old tweets from an abandoned account she had when she was just 16 years old. The Illinois candidate explained that she never hid the fact that she used to be a Republican growing up and that she was a big supporter of deradicalization. She admitted that in her teens she supported Marco Rubio, saying it was a mistake, as her younger self thought she didn’t like Trump and felt she had to support Rubio instead.
The Illinois candidate also pointed out that AIPAC even used AI-generated content in the ad without disclosing it, which she said is against the law. Abughazaleh remarked that AIPAC is clearly trying to prevent her from winning by discouraging her potential voters from voting or pushing them toward small candidates who are very unlikely to win.
Online, many users mocked the AIPAC ad for being full of logical holes. “That ad sounds like an Onion parody,” one user said. Another wrote, “‘She moved recently’ and ‘she had some dumb political views when she was 16’ as the only significant points of attack means they are really grasping at straws.”
Others argued that the fact AIPAC attacked the Illinois candidate only proves that she is doing the right thing. “AIPAC accusing Kat of being shady, not progressive, and not transparent is pure comedy gold. AIPAC facilitates Israel’s impunity to commit ethnic cleansing and genocide, supports the most unprogressive right-wing government, and does not even disclose its identity and motives when releasing these attack ads. AIPAC deserves a gold medal for hypocrisy and zero self-awareness,” one user said.
