Hey, just because someone’s old doesn’t mean they can’t or shouldn’t learn new skills. There aren’t any rules that say you can’t spend an afternoon just watching some TV, but it is important to stay active. That means getting out with friends, learning new skills, or taking up new hobbies. One New York grandpa showed just how active he was when his granddaughter shared on TikTok his weekly routine of making pottery with friends and family.
TikToker Francesca (TikTok/francescarietti) shared an adorable video of her grandpa moving about at his pottery class. He didn’t waste time as he moved from one station for clay and then onto the potter’s wheel. Francesca wrote in the captions that her Grandpa George was going to be “102 in two weeks.” Despite his age however, he still attends a pottery class.
In the TikTok video, George is seen thumbing the top of the clay and spinning it into shape, resulting in what looks to be a small plant pot. Just from the looks of it, the creation is finely shaped and ready for the kiln. In a follow-up video, George’s granddaughter takes a try on the potter’s wheel, though it doesn’t come out as smooth.
What’s most impressive is when George actually started learning pottery. According to Francesca’s TikTok video, Grandpa George was just 94 years old when he started. Now he’s eight years in and, as Francesca put it, he joins a group of “60 year old women” every Thursday for three hours. How often does anyone get to say something like that?
How People Reacted to Francesca’s Grandpa George on TikTok
So many people showered Francesca’s grandpa with praise, not his talent, but his ability to use skills people a fraction of his age still struggle with.
One commenter wrote, “Imagine starting something in your 90s and then still ending up with a decade of experience. So cool!” Seeing someone flex skills they didn’t know they had is always a treat. It’s never too late!
Another commenter shared the possible secret to his long life, saying, “This is why he is 102. He stays active, social and learning new skills!” See, not only is he having fun, he’s got friends, too.
“I know his mind is still sharp with those fine motor skills. Keep it up Mr. George! I do ceramics and I do art therapy. Mr. George would be my ideal client or workshop buddy,” read one of the top comments. Given how his creation looked by the end of the video, I think anyone would want Mr. George as their pupil.
More importantly, we need more videos of Mr. George’s day! In the comments, one person asked about George’s schedule. According to Francesca, her grandfather also has a poetry class, which he does on the same days as pottery. That’s a six-hour creative window, and that sounds heavenly!
