This is more than disturbing

Just because a child is young and less carefree than an adult doesn’t mean they don’t endure unhealthy psychological stress. Whether it’s at home, school, or with their peers, there are plenty of opportunities for kids to be influenced in a dangerous way. Unfortunately, one mother in Indiana didn’t seem too worried after finding what many consider to be a very “concerning” piece of artwork. She was going through her 10-year-old daughter’s book bag when she discovered a drawing that clearly depicted abusive behavior, including drug abuse, alcohol, and self-harm.

Ignoring the alleged signs of distress or concern, the Indiana mother posted her daughter’s drawing to r/RateMyKidsArt and seemed to be more proud of the artwork than anything else. “She’s very much the artsy type. I’m blown away by some of the stuff she does,” the mother remarks with pride. She even admits her 10-year-old is “definitely hitting her emo stage early,” adding how her daughter listens to music from The Gorillaz and Pierce the Veil. Yet, she reassures that everything with her child is fine: “We’re pretty close and I know her better than she knows herself.”

Unfortunately for her, not many believe the Indiana mother is thinking rationally about this disturbing art piece by her daughter. Some people tried a softer, more gentle approach to warn the mom; one user suggested, “It is concerning. Especially with the self harm. I would try to talk to her about it. Maybe ask to draw together?” “Not that she’s not talented… You’re gonna wanna check on her. 😬,” recommended another.

Other people were less polite with their suggestions and were more direct with their concerns. “Please send your daughter to therapy,” says one commenter. “God please get her some support. Stop the denial,” remarked a second. “Is her home life okay?” asked a third. One person even told the mother to take her post to r/depressionsupport instead.

In the end, though, the mother is right; she knows her daughter infinitely better than any random commenter online. However, red flags are still red flags, and hopefully, she’s taken Reddit’s suggestions and is keeping close tabs and an open, honest dialogue with her daughter’s life.
