Drivers approaching a certain intersection in Chesterfield County, Virginia, may notice something unusual about the traffic rules. Technically, there is a stop sign. But locals say the real rule is simple: yield to Gary.

Gary, a wild turkey that regularly wanders into the road, has become a neighborhood celebrity after repeatedly strolling through traffic like he owns the place.

'Gary owns this intersection'

In the video posted by @WRAL5, Gary can be seen walking directly into the intersection as cars approach. Instead of rushing across the road, the turkey calmly struts through the lane while drivers slow down and wait for him to pass. At one point, he even appears to pause briefly before continuing across the street, completely unfazed by the vehicles around him.

The moment has amused viewers online because Gary seems perfectly comfortable wandering through traffic, moving at his own pace while cars carefully navigate around him.

The turkey’s confidence has helped turn him into a bit of a local legend. Residents in the area have reportedly nicknamed the bird “Gary,” and sightings of him wandering through the intersection have become common enough that many locals now recognize him.

Gary’s popularity has even inspired a Facebook group dedicated to tracking his sightings. Members of the group regularly share photos and updates whenever the turkey is spotted near the intersection or walking through nearby neighborhoods.

Wild turkeys are common in Virginia and are increasingly appearing in suburban areas as neighborhoods expand into their habitats. While most encounters are brief, some animals become local regulars. In this case, Gary seems perfectly happy continuing his daily routine. As clips of Gary’s road-crossing adventures spread online, viewers quickly began sharing their own jokes and reactions.

The Internet Thinks Gary the Turkey Owns the Road

As the video spread online, viewers quickly fell in love with Gary’s fearless attitude. Many people joked that the turkey seemed completely aware that drivers would stop for him.

One commenter wrote, “Gary walks like he pays taxes in that neighborhood.” Another viewer joked, “That’s not a turkey, that’s the mayor.”

Others said the bird appeared to have complete control over the intersection. “Gary said traffic laws don’t apply to him,” one person commented, while another added, “You don’t honk at Gary. Gary honks at you.”

Some viewers also pointed out how calm the drivers were in the video, noting that most people simply slowed down and let the turkey pass. “Everyone just accepted that Gary owns the road,” one commenter wrote.
