Imagine shopping and minding your own business, only to have an employee come out of nowhere and accuse you of stealing. This recently happened to a Black woman in Minnesota after she was wrongly accused of stealing while at Aldi.
The woman was preparing for a snowstorm that was supposed to hit Minnesota. After paying for her items, a “hostile” female employee came toward her and accused her of only paying for two items. “Are you gonna scan the rest of these items?” she said, according to the woman. That was when the situation escalated.
Even though the woman showed the employee the receipt, she called for backup. When another employee, named Peyton, showed up, he asked the woman to leave even after she showed him the receipt. He then took her cart outside the door without her permission as a way to make her leave. When she asked him if she had done something wrong, he admitted that she hadn’t but claimed that she was the one being rude.
After the video went viral, Peyton found the woman’s account and reacted with a laugh emoji on her post. He then sent her a message to “squash this” where he apologized for touching her cart and admitted that she didn’t do anything wrong in the situation. In another video, the woman clarified that she never showed the female employee a receipt with only two items as she claimed she saw.
This unfortunate situation opened a conversation about what Black individuals face while shopping, as many believed that this was an example of racism. It was also an example of how employees aren’t always correct when handling customers and might escalate the situation. Viewers also discussed how Aldi never checks receipts and also that the employees were rude toward the woman.
People Reacting to the Minnesota Black Woman Getting Accused of Stealing
A lot of people were left outraged after seeing what happened to the Minnesota woman. Since she was Black and the employees were White, one person believed that this was racism. “This is RACISM btw,” they wrote. Others commented on how Aldi never asked them for receipts, as another person said, “Never once been asked for a receipt at Aldi. Ever. This is absolutely awful.” A former Aldi employee also wrote, “I worked for ALDI for five years. We have never asked anyone to see their receipt.” Another worker then commented, “NOPE I WORKED AT ALDI AND THEY SPECIFICALLY TELL US NOT TO DO THIS BECAUSE THE CUSTOMER CAN SUE.”
More people expressed their outrage with the situation, as many said that they would have asked for a refund. “Normalize asking for a refund and leaving‼! You ain’t making the situation better,” one person wrote. Another person said, “I would have requested a refund so they could have some more work to do.” Someone else asked the woman to report the situation as they wrote, “Report this to corporate immediately, that was disrespectful.” Several others told her to sue as well.
What the woman went through would have been infuriating for anyone, especially if they were accused of stealing stuff. The situation could have been handled differently.
