Do you ever feel like somebody’s watching you? Well, that’s how two Illinois Karens felt when they were doing some shopping at Bloomington in Illinois, claiming a man had followed them in the store. The couple then recorded the confrontation that transpired between them.
Posted by TikTok user Mercedez_max1 (Mercedes), she and her fiancé are heard confronting a man in line. They claim the man, wearing a walking boot on his foot and holding a stuffed animal, looks very confused about why he’s suddenly being recorded. Mercedes explains in the caption to her video that they were looking at stuffed animals and the man was “hovering” and “grabbing stuff” in front of her. She felt like he was “getting closer” so they moved into another aisle.
Mercedes then says the man continued to hover over them and grabbed a pink stuffed animal, which he’s holding in the recording. When Mercedes accused him, she said he got defensive and tried talking to them from another aisle as they moved around the store. In the recording, the man calls Mercedes a “Karen” and she tells him, “This has to get the cops called.” The man asks her, bewildered, “For what?”
It’s at this point Mercedes’s fiancé goes for the jugular. He unkindly tells the man, “You don’t go to an [expletive] store dressed like that. Go home.” To give context, the man is wearing an orthopedic boot, some shorts, a tank, a headband, and has tattoos. There’s nothing really out of the ordinary here.
But Mercedes and her fiancé continue to berate him, telling him, “You don’t deserve to be in public like that.” He also tells him to “go home” and to “grow up,” presumably because he has a stuffed animal. The fiancé says, “Look at you, you deserve to be harassed.” The man replies, “Why, because I just got done working?”
Mercedes goes on to say the man “followed” them to the checkout counter. It’s possible he was simply trying to just purchase his items. After all, he picked out several items, too. Mercedes’ fiancé tried to confront him again, according to her, which is when a “kind bystander” defended them. Apparently, they reported the incident to a chaser.
People Had Mixed Reactions to Mercedes and Her Fiancé ’ Outburst
Comments fell to both sides of the spectrum, with some showing support for Mercedes and others defending the man in the video.
One commenter agreed with Mercedes, “You’re not wrong. Personal space matters,” which is fair but also not grounds for getting police involved.
However, one TikTok user pushed back, stating, “I swear this world we live in is so paranoid.” Mercedes responded to the commenter, saying, “I swear this world we live in is so comfortable with letting disgusting people get too close to them and not saying anything. You are all the problem.” One commenter urged, “You should delete this. That man is a human.”
Commenters continue to assess the video from both sides, wondering who is in the right or wrong. They continue to discuss social issues like personal space and people taking their anger out on strangers without valid reasoning.
