A woman in Texas broke down in tears while sharing a very emotional episode of her pregnancy journey. According to her, after she received the major test results, her doctor discussed with her the possibility of terminating her pregnancy. She disagreed with him, as she wanted to give her unborn son, Grayson, a chance.
Elsa Ann, the mother, shared the story on TikTok. She describes herself as a pro-life woman and seeks to raise awareness surrounding stillbirth and infant loss. Her content focuses on her life as a mother and, lately, on her pregnancy journey with Grayson. This latest part of her story went viral, garnering 637,000 views and 52,700 likes.
The Texas mother detailed that she carried Grayson for 35 weeks and 5 days before his passing. Her pregnancy journey took an unplanned turn at around 25 weeks, she said, when she received some test results.
After 5 weeks of waiting, it was confirmed that Grayson had full trisomy 18, or Edwards syndrome. According to the Cleveland Clinic, this condition causes physical growth delays during fetal development. Unfortunately, most babies don’t survive labor or pass shortly after.
Elsa and her husband were pretty much expecting the results, she said, and they were just wondering what the next steps would be. She said, “I wanted to carry Grayson for as long as I could.”
However, her doctor discussed an alternative: to terminate her pregnancy. According to her, he said, “You can go to New Mexico. So, go over state lines and have the baby’s heart injected with potassium to stop it, and they can induce you there.”
After the doctor discussed other alternatives, the Texas mother refused, saying, “That wasn’t something I was going to do.” The doctor then “abruptly” stood up and left, Elsa said in the clip.
Clip Sparks Debate
The video sparked many reactions.
Some users were sympathetic to Elsa, with one user saying, “Why would the doctor ever say that to you? So, so horrible.” Similarly, another viewer commented, “I am sorry you went through this.”
Other users, meanwhile, believed the doctor was only providing choices and did nothing wrong. One user wrote, “This is why pro-choice matters. People can make their own decisions.” Another user agreed, adding, “Nothing’s wrong with being offered an option, nobody is making you do anything.”
With such a sensitive topic as fetal genetic conditions and termination of pregnancy, people are bound to have strong opinions on the matter. This, of course, leads to lots of engagement. Ultimately, though, Elsa’s story is impactful, which is why it became as popular as it is right now.
Regardless of what people might think about her choice, one thing is certain: Elsa will never forget Grayson.
