A North Carolina Marine veteran and political candidate is making headlines again, this time for the aftermath of surgery. Brian McGinnis, a Raleigh firefighter, Marine Corps veteran, and Green Party candidate for the United States Senate in North Carolina, has become the focal point of a viral moment after a video surfaced on X showing what his left arm looks like three weeks after doctors operated on it.
McGinnis appears to be calmly rolling back his sleeve to reveal his left forearm and elbow in the roughly 30-second clip. He raises the arm and moves it slightly so the camera can capture the damage from multiple angles.
In addition to what appear to be the outlines of metal plates and screws pressing clearly against the skin, we can see surgical scarring running along the forearm where the break was repaired. He follows the hardware’s locations, allowing the tangible proof to do the talking.
The story of those injuries dates back to March 4, when McGinnis shouted his opposition to American military engagement in the Middle East while standing up during a Senate Armed Services Subcommittee hearing. A violent altercation broke out close to a doorway as Capitol Police moved in to take him away.
Republican Sen. Tim Sheehy of Montana, a former Navy SEAL, got up from his chair and physically assisted the officers in removing McGinnis from the room. A camera captured an audible snap during the struggle.
After being transported to George Washington University Hospital, McGinnis’s family confirmed that he needed surgery for two fractures in his forearm. According to Capitol Police, he resisted removal by forcing his own arm into the doorframe.
That account is completely disputed by McGinnis and his supporters.
According to The Hill, the Raleigh Fire Department then put him on paid administrative leave, and he is currently facing several charges, including an unlawful demonstration charge and three counts of assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.
Internet Reacts To North Carolina Marine Veteran Showing Surgical Scars After Senate Removal
The video quickly sparked strong reactions online, with many users expressing outrage over the injury. “I sure hope for his sake that he sues those that brutalized him,” one person wrote. Others framed it as a larger statement on how the country treats those who served. “That is what the government really thinks of its own service members,” a user commented.
Some questioned whether any legal accountability would follow for those involved in the removal. “Why hasn’t Sheehy been arrested for this attack? Hopefully he will be prosecuted because Sheehy is NOT an authorized guard or police agent,” one comment read.
Not all responses were sympathetic, however. “Try not doing stupid shit. I hear it results in less arm breakage,” one person wrote bluntly, while another rejected the framing of McGinnis as a victim altogether. “You mean when he disrupted and attacked a press conference and FOUGHT with numerous people trying to remove him from the room? Yep, he deserved that,” a user added.
The video is becoming popular because it shifts the focus of the narrative from the chaotic removal footage to the more subdued and intimate subject of the physical consequences of what transpired in that hallway. The video doesn’t change for those who think the North Carolina Marine veteran brought it on himself. In any case, it’s much more difficult to scroll past a press office statement than a picture of a veteran’s surgically restored arm.
