Missouri mayor Robbie Guard won the majority of votes in the Cape Girardeau mayoral race, but has been mocked online over a telling photo. In a double bicep pose, a picture of Guard is circulating online with him wearing a “Grab ‘Em” tank top, which shows Trump and a cat. Needless to say, the reference is to the viral Trump video from 2016, but many found Guard wearing such a controversial shirt to be in poor taste.
While Robbie Guard hasn’t been too vocal about whether he’s an avid Trump supporter or not, hundreds across Facebook and Reddit have been using this photo as a point of criticism. Speaking to KFVS12, Cape Girardeau’s new mayor has promised to address crime, homelessness, and concerns with the fire department. While many congratulated him on his victory, plenty others kept reposting the photo, along with snarky remarks about his appearance.
Robbie Guard’s Appearance in His Viral Photo Has Become a Major Point of Contention
“This key specimen of a man may replace trump,” remarked one Redditor on r/trashy, with another calling Guard “fat white trash.” A third chimed in, criticizing the whole state, saying, “I feel like you all are sleeping on what a garbage state this is,” while a fourth pointed out how the state has consistently voted Republican.
Negative comments on Facebook weren’t much nicer, with one user saying that “He’s going to get eaten alive and I’ll be right here watching- popcorn in hand.” One commenter shared the viral photo again, asking, “Is this your mayor….?” On the flip side, people by the dozens expressed their congratulations and high hopes of the positive changes Robbie Guard could bring to the community.
Guard’s criticisms about his appearance and alleged support of Trump are a stark contrast from New York City’s new mayor, Zohran Mamdani. The Uganda-born American politician has received plenty of support and praise. Though, he has also been criticized, mostly for his decisions rather than his appearance, unlike Guard.
This situation with dragging Robbie Guard online shows that not only is online appearance important, regardless of context, but skin color has become quite a contentious issue, especially considering the current political climate.
