Minnesota lawmakers are considering new legislation that would ban prediction markets in the state, a move that is already drawing strong reactions online. Prediction markets are platforms that allow users to bet on the outcome of future events, ranging from political races to sports matchups. Popular platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket operate federally and are currently accessible across the United States, including in states where traditional online sports betting is not legal.

Under the proposed legislation, operating such platforms in Minnesota could become a felony. While the measure has advanced in the Senate, its path forward remains uncertain in the House, where leadership has indicated the bill may have already missed key deadlines.

Online discussion, particularly on Reddit, has focused less on how prediction markets work and more on what users see as inconsistent priorities.

One commenter supported the crackdown outright, writing, “Good, that [expletive] is going to ruin lives,” while another described the platforms as “100% predatory.” Concerns about addiction and fairness were common, with some arguing that users could be at a disadvantage against better-informed participants.

At the same time, others questioned why lawmakers are targeting prediction markets specifically while other forms of gambling remain widely accessible. One user pointed out, “Almost every bar I seem to stop into in rural MN has a row of folks sitting at the slot machines,” while another simply called the move “strange priorities.”

Some users also raised broader concerns about the gambling infrastructure overall. “I personally think ALL ‘professional’ gambling… should be illegal,” one commenter wrote, while another suggested that removing regulated options could push people toward riskier, underground alternatives.

The debate extended beyond Reddit, with TikTok users echoing similar skepticism. Some argued the effort would ultimately fail, with one commenter claiming, “the lobbyists will win this and the markets will stay open,” while others questioned whether the issue was being prioritized over more pressing concerns.

Despite the mixed reactions, the conversation reflects a broader tension around how different forms of gambling are regulated—and why some are targeted more aggressively than others.

For now, the proposed ban remains under consideration, with its final outcome still unclear.
