New Jersey Assemblywoman Blasts Democratic Colleagues Over Immigration Bills: ‘Why Do We Keep Passing Laws That Are Gonna End Up In Court?’

A New Jersey Republican assemblywoman, Dawn Fantasia, grabbed attention online after she tore into her Democratic colleagues during a floor speech about a set of immigration bills. Fantasia argued the legislation breaks the Constitution and will leave taxpayers with the bill for doomed lawsuits. Her speech made the rounds on social media. Some people cheered her on, while others pushed back.

New Jersey Assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia LOSES IT on Democrats passing illegal immigration laws

Fantasia represents New Jersey’s 24th District, covering areas in Morris, Sussex, and Warren counties. She is a former English teacher. During the debate, she spoke out against a trio of immigration-related bills that New Jersey’s split legislature passed in early 2026.

Governor Mikie Sherrill signed them into law that March. The laws put new limits on local police working with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, stop police from sharing immigration data without a warrant, and ban officers from hiding their identities while on duty, a move partly aimed at federal agents who cover their faces during immigration raids.

In the video, Fantasia goes into the constitutional issues behind the bills. She calls out the Supremacy Clause, reminding everyone that federal law beats state law when it comes to federal authority. “For the love of God and all that is good. Can you differentiate between the fact that we don’t make laws that control the federal government?” she tells the room, pressing her mostly lawyer colleagues on what she sees as a basic legal point.

Her objection isn’t about ideology, she explains. It’s about practicalities, about wasting money, and repeating the same mistakes New Jersey has made before: passing laws that end up in court. Fantasia says she knows she is not likely to change many minds in a statehouse run by Democrats. Still, she insists that everyone, regardless of party, should agree on the logic of not passing laws that are just asking for a constitutional fight.

She reminds her colleagues that states can’t regulate or mess with federal agents, and says it’s obvious the real target here is ICE. But, she argues, states aren’t allowed to touch that. The New Jersey Republican brings up examples from other states, where similar laws have already been shot down, and frames these new bills as more of the same predictably doomed moves.

Internet Reacts To New Jersey Assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia’s Immigration Speech

The clip quickly sparked strong reactions online, with many viewers expressing admiration for Fantasia’s directness. “Finally, a woman with common sense said the words that needed to be said. I respect her and everything she stands for. Please listen to her,” one person wrote.

Others went further in their praise. “I don’t know who this is, but I would vote for her for president,” a user commented. Some responses took a more critical view of the broader political dynamics at play. “So it’s States Rights when the Federal Government won’t let you discriminate, but when you want the federal government to do it then it’s OK? The way that the Right turns off and then on State’s Rights is amazing it truly is,” one comment read.

Some users were more resigned about the outcome of her appeal to colleagues. “They know and don’t care. She is beating her head against a wall,” one person wrote, while another added, “They don’t care. They are happy to fritter away other people’s money.”

The courts will decide what happens with these laws, but Fantasia’s speech got people talking again about just how much power states have over federal immigration enforcement. There’s also a lot of debate about who ends up paying the legal bills when these arguments hit the courts.
