Every new mom knows that going shopping for clothes after having a baby is not always the easiest journey. For Macy, a woman in North Carolina, she was looking forward to getting some new clothes after recently having a baby. However, that experience didn’t go as she expected when an Aerie employee decided to talk rudely about her behind her back.
Macy (@macyanndennis) shared a TikTok video after she had an alarming experience at an Aerie while shopping for clothes. Macy says she’s a people pleaser and struggles with feeling like a nuisance everywhere she goes. So, she said she was already feeling put out when it comes to taking a day for herself to look for new clothes. Specifically, she was dreading looking for a swimsuit, especially after just having a baby.
Macy picked out a handful of bathing suits at Aerie. She apologized to the employee, who “wasn’t a very friendly person,” according to Macy, telling her she had quite a few things to try on. She tried on several bathing suits and decided she didn’t like two of them, so she hung them back up in the store. She then gave the rest to the employee when she wasn’t able to remember where she got them from.
Macy walked around the store some more and found another item she wanted to try on and returned to the dressing room. As she was doing so, she was met with a shocking surprise. She discovered the rude employee “mid-sentence talking [expletive] about how much stuff” Macy tried on. Macy said she felt upset, as she was “already insecure and having a hard time” shopping for a bathing suit. Macy said the employee immediately acted awkward since she was caught talking badly about a customer.
Being a kind person, Macy immediately apologized for trying on so many different things. She explained to the employee that she “just had a kid” and felt badly about trying on so much clothing. The employee tried to backtrack and say she wasn’t talking about Macy when she entered the dressing room. Macy tells her audience that it caught her off guard because “that’s her job” to help the customers. She tries to hold back tears as she explains this.
Macy ended up telling the front desk employee about her experience in the hopes that it would fix matters. The employee was very nice to her and “tried to do damage control,” apologizing for her experience. Macy considered calling and reporting the incident to Aerie customer service but decided against it.
Commenters shared their annoyance with Macy upon hearing what she dealt with. One commenter stated, “Mind you that’s the job SHE APPLIED FOR.” Another commenter shared on a personal level, “Aerie & American Eagle have the worst customer service. I like their products but they are rarely nice and usually seem bothered.” Other commenters showed support for Macy in other ways. One commenter said, “I’m so sorry that happened BUT 3 swim sets to choose between (after having a baby) is something to be sooooo excited about!! You go GIRLLLL!”
The video, which went viral on TikTok, continues to bring in comments regarding motherhood and being kind to people no matter what, because you never know what they’re going through. It sheds an important light on how workers should treat their customers, no matter the scenario.
