Representative Tom Emmer has demanded that Ilhan Omar step down from her congressional position in Minnesota after a public filing reported her net worth had surged from 65,000 to over 30 million dollars in recent years. Omar maintains this is a mistake.

The Republican representative posted his comments on social media, where they quickly spread and prompted a heated online discussion about whether Congress should be held to a different standard for financial disclosures.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer calls for Minnesota Rep Ilhan Omar to be fired over fraudulent acquiring millions of dollars

“Ms. Omar, I mean she went from $65,000 net worth that she was reporting on her congressional disclosures to reporting over $30 million in net worth in just… pic.twitter.com/9FPvne92dn

The comments were posted on X by the account @WallStreetApes, which shared a video clip from a Fox News appearance.

The clip features House Majority Whip Tom Emmer in an interview in which he speaks critically of Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar. Emmer references an apparent drastic rise in her net worth over the last number of years, from approximately $65,000 to more than $30 million. He then says, “I believe she should be terminated; I do not believe she should be in Congress.” It then cuts to Emmer looking directly at the camera.

Emmer’s comments concern Omar’s filings for Congress surrounding finances and business enterprises. Omar has said the discrepancy is due to an accounting mistake; she subsequently resubmitted the disclosure, which indicated a much lower overall family asset, somewhere between approximately $18,000 and $95,000. These were the details included in the original X post and subsequent articles; the general allegations regarding business practices are still being publicly debated and have not been legally resolved in a Congressional context.

Online Reactions to Emmer’s Remarks

Some highlighted perceived impotence in Congress and a sense of public betrayal: “Our Congress isn’t important, they’re impotent. This is just starting to seem like ritualized humiliation in the public’s face. If they can’t get rid of her with all that is now known, they can’t do anything… We’re being betrayed.”

Others questioned Emmer while addressing the issue: “While Tom speaks out against Ilhan, I still can’t stand him. He imported a bunch of Somalians to St. Cloud, MN, against community protest. Another city destroyed.”

Several called for stronger measures beyond firing: “These calls go nowhere. I call for democrats to be jailed… What happens? NOTHING. JUST LIKE THESE CALLS.” And “If she is not fired, deported, and forced to pay back every penny with interest… Then I suggest all of us run for office, because apparently it endows you with an invisible shield that protects you from the law being enforced.”

Additional comments zeroed in on the accounting explanation: “And her accounting firm. Are they lying now or lying then?” and “So she is claiming she is worth LESS than her yearly salary from congress.”

The moment stands out because it highlights ongoing scrutiny of financial disclosures by a sitting member of Congress from Minnesota, fueling broader online discussions about accountability in Washington.

The clip has since fueled broader online discussion about financial transparency and accountability for members of Congress. Whether Emmer’s remarks lead to any formal review remains to be seen.
