In a sharp rebuke following the April 30th House floor vote, South Carolina Representative Nancy Mace expressed her disbelief and anger after a provision restricting the use of SNAP benefits for sugary drinks was stripped from the latest legislative package. Her words triggered a storm of comments and anger from both Democrats and Republicans, and it heated up quickly.
In a post shared on X, following the very controversial House ruling which reverses a ban on Soda that many states had already enacted this year by way of the Big Beautiful Bill, South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace obliterated their decision and questioned their logic. This is what she said about the ruling.
The House just voted against banning soda from SNAP. Why should the government fund your soda purchases? If SNAP recipients want to buy sugary drinks, they can do it on their own dime, not on the backs of a taxpayer-funded nutrition program.
Her comments caused an uproar. Democrats took to her post and attacked her and conservative mindsets on funding an illegal war, while local Republican citizens questioned why their tax dollars should be going to people buying junk food that’s bad for them.
“The Government doesn’t fund it, tax payers do and I’d rather the $24/year that come out of my taxes go to someone so they can enjoy a soda than go to Israel so they can get free healthcare while we can’t.”

Whether this move leads to a less healthy South Carolina or simply more strain on tax-paying families remains to be seen. Rep. Nancy Mace is angry over the House reversal and the fight over what ends up banned or not likely isn’t over anytime soon.
