Being bitten by a wild bat at 5 in the morning is not a good way to start one’s day, but it was what one Texas woman was unfortunate enough to experience. Going by Madzdihaa on Reddit, the bat attack victim shared her story of misfortune on r/mildlyinfuriating, explaining how she believes her apartment’s management might be trying to cover the situation up. Hundreds tuned in to her post, with many concerned about her contracting rabies.
According to Madzdihaa, the bat came in through a hole in her bedroom, and she attempted to trap it by keeping the door closed so animal control could capture and test it. Unfortunately, she claims the apartment’s admin staff entered while she was at the hospital and opened her bedroom window to let out the bat, leaving no trace for animal control.
Luckily, she believes animal control was convinced of her story. “Mind u, they told me that another residence in the apartment next to me complained about a bat in their apartment a week ago,” she wrote. The wild bat bite was one issue, though; she was both shocked and relieved by how much of her medical bill she didn’t have to pay. “I’m glad I’m still under my parents’ insurance. These medical prices make me wish I stayed in Trinidad and never moved,” she sighed.
Many Redditors Blame the Landlord Failing to Maintain the Apartment
Among the many who commented, many were worried the bat attack could be an ongoing problem, given that another tenant had reported a bat in their home. “Having bats in your apartment is crazy. I’d try to see if that’s grounds for breaking your lease and try to move elsewhere,” said one commenter, adding how deadly contracting rabies can be.
Others agreed that this incident could be the landlord’s mismanagement to blame. “They failed to maintain the building in a manner such that pests could not enter, and you got injured as a direct result,” wrote another user. Of course, a few took the opportunity to humor OP: “That’s not how you become Batman,” joked a third.
While Madzdihaa hasn’t responded to how she plans to approach her apartment’s management about this whole ordeal, she fortunately appears to be recovering well. “After getting discharged from the hospital, I went and got a McGriddle,” she recalled with smiley emojis.
