A woman in Washington, D.C., found out, thanks to a follower of hers, that the TikTok AI summary tool had mistakenly called her a “monkey.” This, according to her, further proves her point that AI has a “racial bias” and asked for TikTok to remove the feature altogether.
The woman in question is Aisha Marie Noelle. She usually shares her thoughts about a variety of topics, mostly politics, and has more than 111,000 followers. The clip in question, however, became her biggest in months, garnering 40,600 views and more than 9,700 likes.
The Washington, D.C., woman revealed that she had found out about the issue after a follower brought it to her attention. Before laying out the details, she blasted TikTok’s feature, saying that it is “so [expletive] stupid,” and adding, “TikTok, get rid of that [expletive]. Nobody wants that.”
After explaining how the AI summary worked, she thanked the aforementioned follower for telling her that there was “something racist” in her AI summary. It read, “This video features an animated sequence where a person’s face gradually transforms into a stylized monkey face.”
Aisha found the AI summary interesting, since she has spoken about how “AI has a racial bias” in the past. She clarified that no such “animated sequence” or “transformation” occurred during the clip with the “monkey” AI summary. The video, in fact, shows her lip-syncing to The Living Tombstone’s “No Mercy,” and Aisha was celebrating 110,000 followers.
Internet Goes Off Against AI
The video sparked multiple responses online.
Some users chose to blast AI as a whole. One viewer commented, “I didn’t think I could hate the AI summary MORE and yet here we are.” Another one wrote, “The AI summary is always describing videos wrong every time I click it. It’s a useless feature.”
Others decided to have a look at the AI summary for the Washington, D.C., woman’s newest clip. One couldn’t find it, saying, “Real interesting how there’s no AI summary for this particular video tho.” Another user, however, did find it, and it read, “This video showcases impressive AI-generated art with a consistent blue and white color scheme.”
Currently, the controversial and inaccurate AI summary cannot be found or accessed.
