Google is pitching a massive new data center in Michigan, which the company claims would rely on cleaner energy. Despite Google’s claims that the project will not have a major environmental impact, many Michigan residents remain skeptical and have criticized the company for its plans to expand its infrastructure in the state.
According to reports from MLive, Google recently proposed a 1.5 million-square-foot data center to be built west of Detroit Metro Airport. The company said the project would bring jobs and tax revenue to the state while avoiding the use of local groundwater. Google, which is also financing solar energy investments in Michigan, claims the facility would therefore have a smaller environmental impact than typical data centers.
However, the project is expected to require as much power as 750,000 homes, and reports indicate that it could use more than 2 million gallons of water per day. There are also concerns about transparency, as both Google and state officials signed non-disclosure agreements related to the project.
Michigan Residents React to Google’s Data Center Pitch
Michigan residents were not thrilled about Google’s proposal, as many people seemed skeptical that the project was in the best interest of locals. “Considering this administration wants zero regulations and is intentionally leaving a vacuum for oversight, I can’t trust anything whatsoever that the companies claim,” a resident wrote. “What could possibly go wrong?” another user asked sarcastically.
Others were skeptical about Google asking public officials to sign NDAs. “NDAs with public servants should be illegal. I hope the community moves to recall these ‘representatives.’” Someone else responded, “Officials shouldn’t have the authority to sign them. They have obligations to the public that should prevent them from signing one.”
Something that bothered many locals was how heavily the state was being targeted by big tech companies looking to expand their infrastructure. One user said, “The number of data centers being proposed/eyed for Michigan is nauseating. We are surrounded by some of the greatest natural resources on the planet, and we must protect them at all costs.”
Some other folks raised additional concerns about data centers, however. As one user put it, “The biggest issue I have with Data Centers is they are all mostly speculative endeavors. Most of these companies are hoping to build here and either lease them/get bought out by whoever wins the AI lottery. They have no planned usage, and should the winds of change blow in a different direction will collapse.”
Google’s environmental impact on Michigan remains to be seen, but judging by these reactions, it is clear that the new project will be closely scrutinized by locals.
