Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has come under fire after saying that “no one gets extra rights” while commenting on the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the state’s voting map. The governor’s response sparked outrage among some Louisiana residents, who believe a new redistricting map could negatively affect Black voters.
The controversy began after the Supreme Court struck down Louisiana’s 2024 congressional map in late April. The map, which had been challenged in 2025, was ruled unconstitutional in a 6-3 decision, preventing the state from using it in the upcoming election. The main point of contention is that the map created a second majority-Black district, and the ruling was viewed negatively by many in the local Black community.
When asked about the issue during an interview with 60 Minutes, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry defended his decision to halt the primaries while state lawmakers attempted to draw a new map. He argued that it is not possible to have a country that treats everyone equally while also allowing “a law that sorts everyone by race.”
He also doubled down on his decision to declare a “state of emergency” and abruptly suspend the elections, even though voters had already cast ballots in the primaries. He said discarding those votes was “not a big deal” and told anyone with a grievance to “take it to the U.S. Supreme Court.”
Louisiana Residents React to Governor Jeff Landry’s Redistricting Opinions
Reactions to Landry’s interview on Reddit’s r/Louisiana were largely negative. Multiple users mocked the governor for saying that “no one gets extra rights” before allegedly proceeding to “insanely gerrymander so white people get extra rights.” Others criticized Landry, writing, “Except for the ones you and your anti-democracy buddies decide to give to Christian conservatives, right? I can’t wait to sign that petition.”
Some Louisiana residents also had harsh words for the governor. One user said, “Meanwhile, the state gets redistricted to hell to give extra power to the least popular of the two parties. He’s such a lying, oily little snake. Can’t wait to vote out all of these insane people so we can rebuild our state and country.”
Others appeared baffled by how the governor framed the situation as though he were the victim. “Just remember, everyone, the real victim here is Jeff Landry. No one else, just him.” Another frustrated commenter added, “He’s a regressive toad wasting good people’s time, oxygen, and money.”
It remains unclear what will happen to Louisiana’s congressional map in the future, but judging by these reactions, the issue is likely to remain highly contentious.
