New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani announced on X that the city has removed major hurdles to building affordable housing. He says the change will get new homes built nearly two years faster.

The post, which includes a short video, has sparked a lot of comments online. According to the mayor’s office, the goal is to help working New Yorkers who are struggling with the housing crisis.

We've removed major hurdles to building affordable housing —  a move that will get homes up nearly 2 years faster.

In the video, Mayor Mamdani and other city officials appear on a running track where large hurdles are labeled with regulatory barriers such as “Complicated Lottery Paperwork,” “Delayed Building Permits,” and “Lengthy Environmental Review.” Officials are shown stepping over or removing the hurdles in a staged demonstration, while separate shots show the mayor in a suit standing with arms crossed and smiling at a podium. Text overlays and the post caption explain the policy changes.

The caption states: “We’ve removed major hurdles to building affordable housing — a move that will get homes up nearly two years faster. We’re in a race to tackle our housing crisis, because working New Yorkers can’t afford to wait.”

Public Pushback on the Mayor’s Hurdle-Clearing Pitch

Several users dismissed the announcement as performative. One wrote, “The Mamdani administration is nothing but calculated optics and propaganda.” Another said, “This is by far the worst commercial you’ve ever put out and basically makes it look like you’re a bunch of [expletive] running the government. We call this propaganda!! It’s the oldest trick in the book!”

A third added, “Create reels. Make promises. Do nothing. Rinse Repeat. Where are the free bus rides? Where is the city-operated grocery store?”

Others raised specific policy concerns. A NYC real estate broker commented: “As a NYC real estate broker, I deal with your ‘housing crisis’ often: non-paying tenants who squat 12-24 months while courts do nothing, thanks to your tenant protections. ‘Removed major hurdles’ = you simplified the lottery paperwork for your subsidized units that still don’t get built because of zoning, taxes, and regs YOU created. Rents keep exploding because supply is dead. This is clown-level spin, not a solution.”

Additional replies included: “The reason there’s a housing crisis in NYC is not because of inventory issues, but because of harboring illegal immigrants and spending $1.5 billion this year providing them with free services. The answer is simple: cooperate with ICE to deport them. That should be federal law.”

The announcement has added to the ongoing public debate over how best to address New York City’s housing crisis. As reactions continue on X, the post reflects the sharp differences in views on the effectiveness of the mayor’s latest initiatives.
