New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani drew major attention online after challenging a famous quote from former President Ronald Reagan during an event announcing a new city-run grocery store in the Bronx. The New York mayor argued that the real fear for many Americans is not government involvement, but working all day and still struggling to afford food for their families.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani mocks Ronald Reagan’s infamous quote. “I can think of nine words more terrifying than ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help…’” “I worked all day and can’t feed my family.”

Clips of the mayor’s remarks spread rapidly across social media platforms. On Reddit, posts featuring the speech gained thousands of upvotes and hundreds of comments as users debated affordability, wages, and the role of government programs. The clip also circulated widely on X, formerly Twitter, where it received millions of views and heavy engagement from both supporters and critics.

In the video, Zohran Mamdani references Reagan’s famous line about fearing the words, “I’m from the government and I’m here to help.” He says he disagrees with that idea and instead argues that “I worked all day and can’t feed my family” is far more frightening for many working Americans. The mayor says his administration plans to use government programs to help lower grocery prices and improve access to affordable food throughout New York City.

According to Common Dreams, the comments came during the announcement of a planned 20,000-square-foot city-run grocery store in the Bronx. City officials claimed the location could open by the end of next year and would become the second publicly operated grocery store announced by the city. Another location in East Harlem is expected to open later in the decade.

Zohran Mamdani said the stores are part of a broader affordability plan aimed at helping residents manage rising costs. He also described the project as an example of how government programs can directly improve daily life when focused on the needs of working people.

Zohran Mamdani Speech Sparks Online Debate

Online reaction to the speech was heavily political, especially on Reddit, where many users supported Mamdani’s focus on affordability and criticism of Reagan-era policies. Some commenters argued that both major political parties have become too connected to wealthy corporate interests and no longer properly represent working-class Americans.

Several users praised the mayor for speaking directly about issues such as food prices, wages, and the difficulty of covering basic living expenses. Others said his comments reflected growing frustration among people who feel financially overwhelmed despite working full-time jobs.

The discussion also expanded into debates about the Democratic Party, with some commenters criticizing party leadership and claiming progressive candidates often face resistance during primary elections. Senator Bernie Sanders was frequently mentioned during those conversations.

Some reactions included strong criticism of Reagan and conservative economic policies. “Reagan was a president who basically told people he couldn’t help them,” one user wrote. Another commenter said, “The scariest government sentence is actually that your paycheck isn’t enough to survive.”

Not everyone agreed with Mamdani’s message, however. Some users questioned whether government-run grocery stores would work effectively or remain financially sustainable long term.

The debate surrounding Mamdani’s comments showed growing frustration over affordability, wages, and the role government should play in addressing economic struggles faced by working Americans.
